New $800million superyacht design

Just theoretical for now, but a South Korean designer has come up with a tri-marin hull design for a massive yacht. 26 cabins for guests and 46 cabins for crew. Nearly 800 feet long. I think it's safe to say those guest cabins won't weigh in at 4 Dtons each... :)

$100m for a giant container ship, so call that megayacht a $25m or $50m ship with a lot of handcrafted interior fittings. :-) To be realistic, something that size, if built, will be bought and used as a charter yacht but at that point the difference between yacht and cruise liner become a bit hand-wavy.

In-game, the cost of an off-the-shelf yacht should really be multiplied by a factor of 2 or higher to reflect the fittings.

IRL the bigger yachts will be fully custom layout so you're going to have to wait 2 years for your boat to build and in Traveller add another multiplier to the price. They sometimes cost more second hand, since the buyer doesn't want to wait 2 years and really likes that specific one.

I'm sure the fittings for this ship are quite expensive to raise the price tag so much. Still, it's a one off design, and a luxury one at that, so no economies of scale.

That kind of brings up a valid point. Ships of this type are more works of art than commercial endeavors, so the building process for say a yacht or high end plaything would (should) incur a higher building cost.

Probably an unnecessary rule complication, but maybe a good way to drain credits from the bank accounts of players. Not much pew-pew playing accountants in space, but not every adventure needs violence and muscle.

The estate of Paul Allen owns some of the world's largest yachts, and besides being luxurious yachts, they're also some of the most advanced research ships in the world. He lent one of them to researchers who found a battleship lost in World War II, and researchers aboard another one found a lost WWII carrier.

His estate also owns over 30 military aircraft, which are on display near where I live. (I haven't been there yet.) I'm not sure whether they're in flying condition, but I would assume that they have had their weapons removed or disabled.

So yachts aren't necessarily just about luxury. They might be for science or some other purpose related to the owner's interests.

I have previously proposed the idea of a campaign where the patron (or a player character, if players are OK with status imbalances) is a dilettante mercenary, where profits from military action are desirable, but secondary to the goal of bringing glory to the dilettante. A militarized yacht would be a reasonable ship for such a campaign.
