And next to a Fletcher for scale.

Nice :)

One of my previous jobs involved knowing a lot about submarine masts. I became a sad "spotter" type who could identify submarine classes (and sometimes even individual boats) just by looking at photos of their masts above the water

Its the impression that counts, and it works for me :)

I made a similar model for SDD's 1/600 coastal forces range as well as mine markers and torpedo markers (and quite a few MTBs, Schnellboote and other coastal craft, and a few 15mm WW2 masters as well). IIRC the moulds were sold to Stronghold when SDD closed down but I haven't checked their website to see if they ara available.

What colour are you using for your ocean there? I like it a lot. Looks like Lifecolor PRU Blue (which is distinctly green) with blue-er highlights.

The base coat is Reaper master series Deep Ocean. On top of that is a textured coating of Vellejo water effects atlantic blue.

I wonder if the quote is because they sneak up and attack you or if it's because there are no showers on subs. :)

At least not the three that I toured. :)

I think the "clean sweep" meaning might also have been used if all torpedoes were expended/used during a patrol and some of the ships targeted were sunk. Thus I think that not coming back with any stored torpedoes was a part of the meaning as well. BTW, very nice "cheap" miniature you have there SB, heh. Nicely done!.
