My first demo

Mongoose
I ran my first demo today at a local con. It was nearly a disaster.

First, my table had already been taken by another GM by mistake, and then by the time that was sorted out, most of the gamers had already gone off to their first games of the day. There were still a few folks wandering about, but they lingered around the historical games. There were a bunch of kids who expressed interest in Evo, but a friend of mine was running SST at the same time, and they were already slotted for that.

There were groups of people who stopped over to take a look at the minis and terrain, and they had a lot of posotive commentary, several were even directed to one of the two retailer booths, as they still had 3 squads of MEA, an Abrams, and a Type 99. But due to the lack of variety, I dont think any of it sold.

Two of the guys stopping over decided to play, and we got a great 1k battle of EFTF vs PLA. Several highpoints included a british fireteam climbing a tower, and readying their Minimi.... and then a Type 99 blasting them to kingdom come!
Here's the tower in question. Laid the top on it's side, and threw some GF9 fire templates around - fun for the whole family!

Then in another building, 3 PLA got into some nasty melee with a brit fireteam, and the brits took a casualty, but sorted them out in the end. In reward for their efforts, they took a Tank shot from the other Type 99, (through an open door) and were killed off themselves!!

They played for a little over two hours, and the PLA were shattered after losing one Type 99, and a four man fireteam in the last turn. Thats when the Con organizer notofied me that although I had been told I could have the table all day, a change had been made without him knowing, and some very patient gentlemen were waiting on me to set up their ACW game.

Overall a good time was had by all, and the only complaint heard was regarding a lack of rules for tanks ramming structures (like the building pictured below)

In lieu of ramming, thats where the Type 99 shot out the fire team adjacent to the archway on the right hand side.

I'm still kicking myself for not having used my camera, it was being used at my friends SST game, and an Ancient Irish vs Late Roman/British game my dad was running one table over.

Sounds like you had a good but frustrating time.

I recognised both your building types that you pictured. I've got a couple of crescent root buildings myself and they are great. I wanted to ask you abou the other buildings.

While I was searching the net for wargaming terrain I came across them. I didn't note down the URL but I thought the idea of being able to have a damaged or undamaged building was good. Do they work well with the crescent root stuff?

Also what's the URL of the manufacturer again?

I made the same mistake that your EFTF player made, high ground equals easy to see (and it works both ways).

On the open door point, I always make sure that my troops close the door behind them, it's one way to avoid that sort of thing...

Here you go Gibbs. It's the Miniature Building Authority.

I was wondering the same thing about how they look next to Crescent Root Studio's buildings, as Gibbs is already aware from a post over on EVOCOMMAND.com I ordered a bucketload of the Crescent Root buildings. I think I'll order at least the fountain, or make one similar to the method dsfrank used for his which looks fantastic. But the MBA's would make great ruins if they are close enough in scale and color.

CRS's stated scale is 28mm, MBA's is 25mm, so this could make a difference, but if close enough I'm more worried about the color. MBA's look washed out on the website, but they state they are more vivid in real life and not as bleached looking. I am very curious what your take is britneyfan97.

Arghhhh! Get out of my head!

I was thinking exactly the same thing. No village is complete without a fountain in the middle of it.

threw in the fountain from MBA as well as a hanged-man from mega-minis I found yesterday, and one of those 'For Sale' cars. Th mini on top of the fountain is from TAG.

The MBA buildings are a completely different shade than Crescent Root, but I use them as if they are meant to be. Not everyones house looks the same over there. It's an unusual mishmash of new and old. (One thing that really struck me was folks walking the streets in traditional garb, but with a bluetooth earpiece in.)

Hope this helps.

I am so going to paint a NEON Pink IPod Shuffle on the head-dress of one of my MEA leaders! "Hey, Azhim, did you order that before valentines day and get it personalized?" "Yes, Rajem, I did. Look, it says - Go Home Yank!"

The pic was awesome britneyfan97. Thank you. While I agree they don't all look alike, the disparity there appears to be a tad too much for me.

Oh, on the CSR did you go with White or Pale Yellow for your color?

Pale yellow. Someone else at the con had the white for a brits v egyptians 1915 game, and I just thoughthey were too bright for my tastes.
Pale yellow works nice for Iraq. And I just fake it for Afghanistan.

Cool, because I just ordered 9 of their buildings in Pale Yellow this week and was informed they would start them next week if I wanted to make any adjustments, I had to tell them before then. Good to know I got it right on first order, because yours look fantastic. Thanks for the quick replies. :)

"Ha Azhim you are a girl, everyone knows that the Ipod Nano is for girls, men buy Ipods."

Couldn't agree more. Although I might get some of them because, thankfully I got unpainted crescent root terrain... I may be able to colour match. Failing that repainting the other buildings may not be that difficult.

No problem. i love the CR stuff, and plan to buy more. I saw something on their page about a mosque coming out at some point. Mix that with some of their wall sections, and a little market. I'll be ready for a 'terror sweep'.

On another note, check out some of the RailKing buildings (I'm still looking for a good link).
The guy that took my table this morning had a Chechyans (sp?) vs Russians vs Zombies game going on at the base of a hydroelctric dam/powerplant with a bunch of their buildings including a control tower, something I've been actively seeking for a long time. Here's some pics of that (since the memory stick is still here with me!)

He loves his zombie games...

Sorry, a little fuzzy there.

Hmm...Zombies, Chechynnes and Russians? What an eclectic mix, where did that idea come from?

I've been thinking about red dragon for city-fighting checkout this link
http://www.reddragonterrain.com/page3.html

Looks a bit more bombed out and dreary than the railway modelling stuff.

I've got no idea. Sorry. As I said I've been thinking about it I haven't actually emailed them and asked them anything yet (I'm still recovering from the crescent root purchase [5 buildings plus overseas shipping]). You'd have to email them to ask although I think that it may be that they only have one colour. Still, you could DIY the paint job. Afterall, thanks to Mongoose you now have plenty of spare time to paint
