"Must Have" books...

I picked up Conan 2e around the holidays.

Can someone recommend what books should be picked up in the order of usefulness?

It really depends on where you want to campaign. If you want to campaign in Stygia, then Across the Thunder River would not be very useful (although it is one of my personal favourites).

Although I am biased, for general gaming, I would recommend Return to the Road of Kings and Ruins of Hyboria as your next purchases.

Of course, you need to define useful. The above are what I consider the most useful in terms of information about the world and the things in that world.

But if you are looking for feats, character concepts, optional rules, and class-combos, then you should consider the Hyboria's F. series, the Player's Guide to the Hyborian Age, and Pirate Isles. I would add Scrolls of Skelos to that, but you might consider waiting for the 2E re-imagining of that book.

If you like religion and cults, you might consider Faith & Fervour.

Then, of course, pick up the specific sourcebook for the region you are adventuring in (if available).

If you want a pre-made adventure, then Conan and the Heretics of Tarantia is my strongest recommendation. Across the Thunder River also comes with an adventure that has had some positive response.

Actually that is something else I was wondering...how much of the 1E material is going to be re-issued for 2E?

For right now General Gaming is good, although I eventually want to start picking up books on the Regions as well as the Religions.

Pre-made adventures would also be helpful.

I personally think that "Across the Thunder River" is the strongest supplement book in the game. But, as Vincent said, it depends on where you want to set your game. Mine tends to be Aquilonia/Pict frontier heavy, hence my preference for the Thunder River book...

Road of Kings/Return to the Road of Kings, Across the Thunder River and Ruins of Hyboria are really good.
The rest you can live without...
And don't forget you can download freely the Signs & Portents Roleplayer magazine from the Mongoose site. Most issues contain Conan stuff.

Check also hyboria.xoth. Thulsa's site is probably the best Conan ressource around. Thulsa is also the writer of Ancient Kingdoms Mesopotamia, a really nice campaign sourcebook with a strong howardian (?) feeling. Probably the best campaign for the game so far, along with Thunder River.

It depends on what you wanna do.

If you want maritime adventure, Pirate Isles is a must.
If you prefer Border strife, then Free Companies is what you'll need.

Of course if you intend to run your adventures in some specific nation, then you should purchase the appropriate regional sourcebook.

Ruins of Hyboria is an excellent toolbox to create adventures from scratch.

As to pre-made adventures, Heretics of Tarantia is truly excellent as Vincent already wrote (Sword & Sorcery flavor), but Reavers of the Vilayet isn't bad either.

The others have good ideas but need some work IMO.

That might depend on what type of campaign you'll run and where you'll set it.

Buy the base book and RoK2, figure out where how and what you'll be doing. Then buy books that support it.

As for the general books.

I like SoS (wait for 2nd to come out). Ruins of Hybori is good too. Might help you develop an adventure.

Faith & Fervor is more advanced. I find it very useful.

The Hyboria's F series is a must. If all your players are playing, for example, barbarians, you can just get Fiercest. For now.

Unless you already have a campaign in mind, when Trial of Blood gets into stores it is designed to start the characters at 1st level and move them on up.

Just a side note. :)

Yes, this one is somewhat awaited, but I saw it was postponed again for April.

Ive found 'Free Companies' and 'the Road of Kings' to be the most useful for me(mercenary game) but i also find 'beyond thunder river', 'hybroia's finest and fallen(dont have fiercest:( ) to be incredibly handy with the variant classes and extra feats and maneouvers not to mention racial info for creating npc's and also inspiring the players to create different characters.

the scrolls of skelos is invaluable if you plan to have a lot of sorcerous villains or one of the pc's as a sorceror.

i havent managed to grab a copy of 'ruins of hyboria' but i wish i had it from what everyone says about it

'pirate isles' is completely awesome if you have a pirate in the party or plan to play alot on the high seas.

Is there are link to the complete product list for Conan?

I am searching DriveThruRpg for Return to the Road of Kings and Player's Guide to the Hyborian Age, but cannot find either of them.

Do they plan on releasing these books as a pdf?

Sovereign Press actually releases the PDFs a couple of months prior to the hardcover release...it works out well because they get free proof-reading and most of the major mistakes are fixed before it goes to press...just a thought.
