MRQ Solos

Do you think solo adventures/quests for MRQ would be a good idea and would they interest you as a player? Your thoughts please, for and agin.

I used to like playing solo RQ adventures when I didn't have anyone else to play with (sob). The RQ2 SoloQuests were pretty good, as I recall.

If they were well thought out and could also be used as the basis of non-Solo adventuring then I'd probably buy them.

For me the RQ2 soloquests were the main way I played the game. Friends preferred (and still do) other systems.

I've drafted some MRQ solos for personal use as I'm sure many people have but I've tried to link them together in setting and tone so that the NPCs and the environment and the geography provide something of a campaign setting. This hopefully gives the individual challenges and quests a more credible feel over the "you are hired to clear the chaos nest" type approach.

RQ2 solos were very good. I'd certainly buy MRQ solos if they are half as good.

It would be great to experiment different kinds of solos: narrative 'gamebook' style solos, but also more tactical ones with keyed maps to explore with set or random combat encounters.

There are of course lots of different options. The most playable tend to be "cut and come again" where the situation is such that you can revisit the scene and continue the adventure.

Things like Arena combats are good for this as are quests where the object is to keep collecting a resource of some description (bandit heads, rare gemstones dropped by certain critters, dinosaur tongues etc).

The attrition rate for characters though is very high. I've always found solos to be extremely deadly. One mistake or set of poor rolls and there's no back up. Hero Points could go some way to ameliorating this but as they are as rare as hen's teeth it's something of a limited strategy.

I'd also be interested in solo MRQ, as I'm always GM, never player. I prefer games that take the setting seriously. Thet can be altogether absurd, as long as the absurdity is within the world concept. (Someone has cornered the market in red hair dye! Help the Vingans try out substitutes & find alternate supplies". I think it's interesting to force the player into unusual circumstances. For example, main character mus be either a duck or a newtling.
