MRQ Clanking City one off - anyone help?

Mongoose
Hi chaps, I'm thinking of trying to sell some friends on a MRQ game, so I thought I might run a one off. I have Magic of Glorantha, Clanking City and Jrustela plus the main rules, and the Glorantha book. I don't have the Glorantha Players Guide yet, or the cults books. I'm not very familiar with the Mongoose website, I normally come here to buy stuff or see whats out, so I'm not aware of any MRQ scenarios on here?

So a couple of questions!

1. The map in pieces through the book is lovely, but so small it hurts my eyes. Is it available on pdf anywhere? That would massively increase the utility of the book for me, and a poster sized version would be awesome, I'd take it to a print shop. it's a lovely map - but in pieces and tiny!

2. I will probably have to pregen characters, and try to put all relevant stuff on there so they can quickly read through before play. They are familiar with RQ2 rules and with Glorantha in the 3rd age, so i thought EWF might be the way to go - have them get involved in a mission that requires them to port in, conduct an assassination or recover something, then port out. So any ideas? It needs to fit in 4-6 hours play, so can't be too combat heavy based on my experience of other editions of RQ (3 hours ot fight a gang of ten enlo!) I'd love any story ideas, so anyone able to help?

There are adventures in the S&P magazine - none in Clanking City, though. Most of these are not really Gloranthan, although one definitely is (My Brothers Feast) and another features ducks - so should be!

I will create an index to all things RQ that have appeared in S&P today.

Thanks Acolyte! Do you work for mongoose? Can you mention ye olde map?
As I said, it's clear the map artwork exists, but short of a midnight raid on Mongoose - hide in chippy, duck in to junk shop, sprint over road climb on roof an cut hole in roof - nope, I have better idea I'll just sit outside with a dog and a big sign "Need Clanking City map, please give generously" - is there any way of getting a copy? :)

Indexing S&P's RQ articles would be awesome. I have only downloaded a couple so far, owing to time/work pressures (I write for other rpg companies!) but it's a great mag from what I have seen. :)

Now these 'ere Dragon Cults - one lacks a martial art style, do they get a free choice? We have several styles which no cult is associated with in the book?

Another quick question - I've seen the core rules errata pdf, are there any other errata, as for Magic of Glorantha f'r instance?

Yes, I work at the towers. I also have secret forum powers (bwahaha !). I will see what I can find with the map.

Indexed articles I did this morning at about 7:00, it is now stickied at the top of this particular forum.

To which dragon cult are you refering and which book is it in. Might just be they're just big softies ;). Let me know and I will see if I can find the author and double check with him.

All errata is in the download sections. Unsure if there is one specifically for MoG.

Cheers for that. Not been in ye lair of Mongoose since last summer, but know the land of the magic roundabout. (You will either instantly get the reference to Swindon, or assume i am barking mad!)

I'll look up the cult and let you know. There ar emore matial arts styles than cults anyway.I'm also trying to see if there is any game mechanics reason to take Dance for this mission! I note Draconic Illumination is limited by Dance or Martial arts, which ever is highest. Shame its not lowest really. I need to read the description of Dance I think, but I was wondering of there is any good reason why you could not in combat use Dance instead of Dodge skill and NOT interrupt using Draconic magic? That would seem to make perfect sense from how I understand it so far... might be an interesting house rule anyway! I dunno who wrote Magic of Glorantha off the top of my head but if thy are about I'd be interested in their thoughts on this!

OK, my silly Noob question. I see the basic backgrounds - Noble, Peasant, Barbarian, and Townsman. Are they universal to all cultures? I have just flipped through Glorantha: the Second Age a superb book, kudos to the author and Mongoose but I don't see ny varinat Homeland packages in the detailed descriptions thereof. So do my EWF characters just use the basic rules cultures? There are no specifics EWF starting skills anywhere?

Sorry to be a pain!

The Players Guide to Glorantha is exactly what you seek. Think of it as the crunch that goes with G:tSA.

Without that book for the EWF I would use whatever background is appropriate to the culture the characters come from - Orlanthi EWF would be Barbarian, Dara Happans would be civilized, etc. For the profession allow substituting skills that make sense, such as Draconic Mysticism for Theology or Runecasting, or MArtial Arts for a combat skill, etc.

Thanks Rurik! I had no idea hat was in the Player's Guide, and it sounds like i need a copy now. :( I'll have to try drivethru I guess as I can't gte the book here. My local Waterstones does not seem to be very good at getting rpg books in... :(

Still off rpg shopping next month! :)

The main rules were set up to be pretty much generic, with the Second Age being an atlas/sourcebook. The Players Guide to Glorantha is of use for more specific backgrounds and professions(indeed this was one of the main reasons why the book was written). Various other racial books offer still more options.

For EWF professions: Most common: Animal Trainer, Herdsman, Hunter, Priest, Soldier, Wizard with Diplomat, Lord and Miner the least common/almost unknown. This is from the PGtG EWF section - theere are more backgrounds and professions in the book itself. The EWF is large enough for you to be able to justify just about any background in any case.

Cheers chaps - and Rurik I hope you have got better with that spear and your ransom is more than 300 guilders these days, it's been 21 years since RQ2 and the fight in Gimpy's Tavern! :)

I just bought and downloaded the players guide from Drivethru, and found exactly what I was looking for, but your advice would be very sound indeed Acolyte. However even in the few minutes i've had to browse my book I'm very happy indeed with it, and now i'm wondering what Folk Magic is! Off to read more!

Folk Magic - my most most glorious hour (so far) in adding something to the world of Gloranthan RuneQuest. To think that when I was at school I would have thought that working for a games company was too ridiculous to contemplate...

So happy to be wrong!

Hi Acolyte! Yep, I'll look forward to reading that. I write for Chaosium and Atlas Games mainly, but I do love your Swindon ofices - it's what a games company office should look like!

cj, If you have a real problem and desire the feel of bound volumes, I have found that the old methods still rock with Mongoose. I do all my RQ stuff by telephone and mail order, and have had excellent service over the time I have been buying. I have to say they now recognise my name when I give it, so perhaps I am spending more than I originally bargained for (as long as she-who-must-be-obeyed doesn't catch on I'm OK).
But joking aside, the service really has been good and avoids all those stupid conversations with book assistants whose response is 'What was the publisher again- they don't seem to be in this book', as if you go in making up a book name, publisher's name, address and the ISBN reference!

On the topic of suitable scenarios, the three given as a set in S&P as 'Vignettes' by Carl Warmsley, have run nicely in my Gloranthan campaign as a 'Road Trip' at about 1-2hrs apiece, while the players made a series of alarmingly bizzarre assumptions and got into real trouble without even trying. Much hilarity and some decent role-playing, so for a set of new RQ players they will probably work well as tasters either singly or together. They do however not directly involve the GL or EWF so for a deeply Clanking City session, they would probably need a little GM massaging. Also good for a little fun was 'The World's shortest yet Technically Complete RuneQuest adventure', also from S&P
