Movement does not work...

Quintus

Mongoose
Question: The Movement Chart sais that a 4m creature can move 4m each Action. Most humans will have 3 Actions (12-18 Dex range = 3). So a Human can run 2x4m=8m each action, times 3 actions per round, is 24m, times 12 (5 second round, so 12 rounds per minute). That makes:

2x4x3x12 = 288 meters per minute, yet the rule book chart sais 48m.../boggle.

What is going on with those charts...?

I think they just multiplied the 4m per action times 12 for the number of combat rounds per minute, neglecting to think about the number of actions a character can have in a single combat round.

I bought every book so far, but keep on finding these holes and quirks in the game...very upsetting.

Q...

I wouldn't do a straight multiplication to work those figures out. RQ is full of little quirks that seem illogical when put down in plain black and white, but actually do make sense with some lateral thinking applied. This is one of them.

Combat movement rates really do refer to short bursts of frenzied movement in a stress situation. They wouldn't be sustainable over longer periods of time.

Ok. I have a battle waging, and keep track of possible reinforcements (players or NPC's, or monsters) that are 200m away. They hear the horn blown. At a running pace, they can get there in 200m / 96m (per minute) so about 2 minutes (24 rounds) - OR - they can elect to use their combat actions and get there in 200m / 288m = 41 seconds...or 8 rounds.

Its obvious that no player will take the prior case. Now, the tables Does Work Out if one reads these entries as "Number of Meters per Action in X Time Frame".

Assuming a Walking Character with 3 Actions:

4 meter Per action = 4*3 = 12m per Round
48 meter Per Minute for each Action = 48*3 = 144m per Minute
2,880 meter Per Hour for each Action = 2,880*3 = 8,640m per Hour

And that's walking speed...double those numbers for running. Seems odd.

Q...

I think you'll find that running continually for that length of time might be considered sprinting - Heavy Activity, which a character can only sustain for CON CA before risking Fatigue. So that's a start as they'd need to go through 2 tests before arriving.

Personally I'd also add the -20% per test (accumulative) rule discussed on these boards onto these, too.
