Monsters, what monsters?

From the description of Monsters book:

Many of the creatures found in RuneQuest Monsters are beings native to Glorantha, the original gaming world of RuneQuest, such as the grotaron and the timinits, but this certainly does not mean that other worlds are left out in the cold

So, it seems there is both Gloranthan and general monsters in there.

I recently got the Monsters book and I'm quite happy with it, by the way! The artwork is well done without being overblown and taking up valuable space and the entries are are short and to the point, expanding on detail only when necessary.

As for your question, yes, there are quite a few beasties native to Glorantha, but by and large these are no different from most other fantasy creatures and can easily be used in any campaign. I'm keen on using Dragonewts in an entirely different setting myself...Most of the monsters are taken directly out of folklore and legend, however. It's a bit steep at $35 in my opinion, but there's very little fat and it's certainly vital in order to run a RQ campaign. Also, it's in color! Makes me wish that the Corebook and Companion were now, even though that didn't bother me at the time. Oh well...

I havw a copy of RuneQuest Monsters and it is IMHO the very best book published for the new RuneQuest series. It's the first full colour supplement and it includes generic fantasy species (Halflings, Dwarves, Elves) classic fantatsy creatures/monsters (like Dragons, Griffins, Goblins, Ogres, Skeletons, Zombies and so on) as well as Glorantha based folk like the Broo, the Duck, Scorpionmen and many, many more.
As has been said before the book features the usual good layout and fantastic (at least in my eyes) artwork. It's my favorite title of the series so far! Go, get one :)

OK, I know the acolades are above, and it's bad form to repeat them...

...but Runequest Monsters deserves it.

I like the illos, I like the creatures (welcome back Shadow Cats!), a good selection of dinosaurs, normal creatures (deer, dogs, crocs, etc), Chaotic features, rules for making hide armour.... and the Crimson Bat and the Mother of Monsters (R Hind Leg AP 530/HP 1,065  )

Excellent stuff, guys! :D

The only thing missing is the Rubble Runners.... :(

Are there any adjustments to the rules or does the bypass armour manoeuvre still work on even something like this?

I know it would still have a shed load of HP to work through but at least be theoretically possible to kill in that case.

Still, it would be nice to see a book named Monsters of Glorthana in the future. I'm waiting for the Monsters PDF.

As it's _hide_ and not _armour_ I think I'd rule you can't bypass it except with something really special.

But then, I think I'm a bit hard sometimes.

All in all I think the monster book was well done. Only complaint I could make would I would have like to have seen a few more newbie monsters for beginning players like rubble runners and weaponsnakes.

Yeah, just a "me too" here. Monsters really is a beautiful book, just the right level of detail, and really professionally finished. I haven't read it in detail, but first impressions are really really good.

Just got Monsters today and I have to chime in too on this one: This may well be my best purchase from Mongoose since the Conan Atlantean Edition. Frankly, this is the first monster book I've purchased since the 3.5 Monster Manual that just looked damned good and useful. I'm ready to hold my game group hostage until they agree to play MRQ now, thanks to this book and the Glorantha book....

Monsters is a really good book, and nice to have in full colour. I would like Mongoose to maybe publish a downloadable list of the monsters in the book which are specifically Gloranthan, and maybe a set of encounter tables to go with.

Although I like the monster book (it is pretty similar to the RQ 3 book), I still prefer a few of the old black-and-white illustrations (e.g. dragon newts in the Glorantha book) :)
I would have liked to have a few examples of fleshed-out creatures for some of the entries, with individual skills, gear and magic, but one cannot have everything.
