Yes, yes... all this fascinating discussion about operating systems, yet no one has asked yet why? So what's getting made to prompt such a survey? :)

Guess you don't consider HP / Compaq a big company then. And they aren't the only ones.

Oh, a lot of the big companies do offer that... if you order from them directly. But obviously not a lot of people take them up on it, or the Linux share would be much bigger.

Please remember that I am writing about my experiences with the situa-
tion over here, which may be somewhat different from the situation whe-
re you live. :)

For example, over here HP is a typical provider of business computers,
far too expensive for the average consumer (its market share is less
than 15 %), and the Compaq brand did not even exist here between 2002
and 2008.
HP, Dell and Fujitsu together have a market share of only ca. 40 %, the
majority of computers - and especially consumer computers - is bought
elsewhere.

Personally I've never bought any computers from big box companies (not since my first IBM 486 in the early 90s anyway). The support you get for them from the companies is terrible.

The notebook is the first one I have since my Apple IIgs... All the PC compatable desktops I've just put the parts together myself.

genuinely i feel like i must be the only person alive who likes VISTA. i've run it for a year, never had a problem with it. i can use all my old programs games ect and i've never had any compatibility issues.

The poll is closed so this militant Mac user didn't get change to cast his vote !

You guys on PCs - you really should check out Mac OS X if you haven't already. It used to be 'the thing that designers use' but these days it appeals to techie/nerdy types even more than designers. In fact, with Adobe's crappy support for the latest tech, designers are almost better off using Windows these days.

The latest Snow Leopard disk is available for just $29/£25 and will install directly without needing the previous OS (hsssh - there's no technical limitation, it's just a license issue). There are numerous descriptions of how to install it onto a 'Hackintosh' (ie. a PC).

There endeth my leading to water - the drinking is up to you ;-)

For mac isnt it more like coolaid instead of water.(j/k) ;P :D

Hmmm I just voted, so the pole is not closed. Perhaps you voted already?

Back on topic.... I use XP and Vista, as for mac.......most likely never...... as for linux or one of its clones, I used to but had little need for it. As for the upcoming Windows 7, I will wait for the bugs to be worked out of it and the first service pack.

Surely you'd be better off writing in Java then it will run on all those OS?

They'd still need to test the software on all the OSes as well, which they probably can't do. Despite claims of universality, Java and its interpreters (and simlar cross platform languages) still have their idiosyncracies.
