Minbari or EA vs Unk

Mongoose
My first battle (5pt Raid, EA Third Age vs Centauri) ended up with a narrow victory for the Centauri. The Primus (my opponent's last ship with 1/3 damage and the rear twin arrays offline) was able to APTE to the edge of the map, easily outrunning the surviving T-Bolt and Hyperion AC, and All Stopping/All Stop and Pivoting the battle lasers into arc. It was a "learn the rules" game...and we both got hooked.

Our second battle (again 5pt Raid, Early EA vs Centauri) turned into a Centauri turkey shoot with the EA easily sending the Centauri packing. This time, my opponent learned why you don't always want to pack ships bow to stern. My pile of Furies had him worried and he packed his fleet around his Maximus for, well, maximum AF coverage. I blew one of his Prefects and *all* his ships (plus my Avenger) were caught in the explosion. Apparently, Centauri are only dangerous to themselves because I could not stop rolling crits with the explosion AD. With 2 crippled ships (2nd Prefect and Elutarian) and one tattered ship (Maximus) vs 2 pretty fresh Saggis, 1 almost fresh Avenger, one crippled/skeleton crewed Hyperion AC, and 12 Furies, my opponent called it a day.

Our next battle is going to be a 7 pt Raid Space Superiority scenario. I don't know what my opponent is going to bring...he's a convert to ACtA Centauri fan(head)dom (he mainly played Centauri and Brakiri in B5Wars), but has been looking at the other races.

I was thinking of going with:
1 Veshatan
2 Teshlans
3 Tigaras
My battle plan is to have the Veshatan/Teshlans sit at one end of the board and advance towards the enemy. Just as they're about to engage, the Tigaras will jump in behind the enemy fleet and use their short range weapons. Both halves of the fleet have the same/similar speeds so I don't have half the ships outrunning the other half. Plus they have the speed to get to vacant 24"x24" squares at the end of the game for the bonus VPs....

The other fleet idea I had was:
1 Marathon
1 Explorer
2 Hyperion ACs
2 Chronos
4 Hermes
The idea is basically the same, but the 2 Chronos and 2 Hyperion ACs would jump in at about the enemy fleet's 4-5 o'clock (or 7-8 o'clock) position. The Hermes and the Marathon are the same speed and the Explorer will start deployed ahead of the group to make up for its slow speed. With 12 Furies/T-bolts, I'm not worried about enemy fighters.

Any advice? I like to give my opponent a hard choice of things to shoot at...the last game, he had a choice between the Nova and 2 Saggi's. He obliterated the Nova on the second turn because he learned to give it a healthy respect in our first game.

We also play with 2 house rules. Fighters are moved and fired in groups of 4 and we alternate moving ships Battletech style (if I won initative and have 2 ships, and my opponent lost initative and has 3 ships, it will go: his ship, my ship, his ship, his ship, my ship. This tends to help the Weenie Ship Horde problem.)

It sounds like you've already got a pretty good fleet and decent tactics. Although, the Explorer is a waste of a point. A Delphi or another Chronos would pobably do more good unless you've got a sneaky trick up your sleeve!

I don't like the mixed Tigara/Teshlan idea. It's almost like giving the Centauri interceptors something useful to do, and with the Stealth modifications in Armageddon, the Tigara is not a high-survivability ship at all -- Twin Arrays alone might get the job done.

Teshlans and Ashintas I do like. Standard fanheaddom means the battle line at 7-Raid. I might expect (espeically vs. Minbari)

2-3 Prefect or Sulust
1-2 Magnus -- You get 2/45 with these, right? I forget.
1 Darkener
2 Maximus
2 Corvan

or something like that. You don't, under any circumstances, want to trade CAFed beam blows with this pile of awful. You'll roast. The Teshlan is fast enough, under all power to engines, to get past this and use its superior turning capabilities.

The other option, of course, is to load up on Tigaras. I haven't ever seen that tried yet, so I don't know if it could work.

Your better off with a Maximus...

Can i nick that for my tag line! as although I like mine it was already taken I note!

It should be "You're better off with..."

Just to be picky. :)

Damn. I'm usually pretty good with my homophones. Granted, I never learned the difference till I was 20... but that isn't important. I had the same issues with "there", "they're" and "their"... but there ( ) fixed now.

Errrr.....right..soooooo.... back on topic. I think you did well, and as Burger mentioned the explorer is only good at tanking damage and thats it. If the Centauri player, had opted for the classic beam team, I would have been surprised at an EA fleet of winning.

As for Minbari, dont rely too much on stealth (its useful don't get me wrong), but there more than one way to skin a cat. Recently I played a Minbari fleet, with my Vorlon fleet (5 point war). I won, becuase I did not engage into battle straight away, and only engaged in turn 8. Forcing a victory in my favour, since I managed to kill more of his than he could of mine. This can work with Bone heads too, get something with all round weapons, and keep you fleet moving away from the battle, only swinging round near the end othe battle. The more terrain, the better too!

With 2 EA games under my belt, I've decided to go with the Minbari this time. I forgot the third race my opponent played in Bab5 Wars and it's the one he decided to go with for this battle.

This fight will be Minbari vs the Narn....
