I stumbled across a real particle physics phenomenon that resembles some of the characteristics of the Traveller meson gun -- discovered in 1903. The Bragg peak is the phenomenon of how high velocity charged particles lose energy while passing through matter. Their rate of energy loss gradually increases toward a peak, then drops off very abruptly. The matter that the particles are passing through end up absorbing the energy lost by the particles.
The difference between that and the Traveller meson gun is that it applies to any charged particles, while Traveller mesons ignore intervening matter. Still, it has some interesting similarities.
