Merc book and tac nuc's

sideranautae

Mongoose
I know that the 1st version of this rule book forgot to list them but does the latest version have tac nuc's? The 1st version has portable Nuc dampers to use as a defense against them.

OK, I've searched the pdf and found references to nuclear weapons (delivered by tac missiles and artillery) in the "timeline of warfare" section and nuclear dampers are also listed (briefly with stats for the vehicle design sequence) but looking thru the lengthy (and annoyingly printed at 90 degrees to the rest of the book) weapon listing, I can't see stats for them.

Will double check and post back if I find anything.

Do you have your own rules for tactical nukes?

I'm guessing that with the 3rd Imperium making them illegal there was no need to include stats, as of course Traveller is a rules set and not a setting alone

;)

No and I didn't see them in the SRD's but, as there were rules for defending against them I thought... :( Silly me.

I forgot, it is a rule set NOT tied into a setting. Except for the PC's attributes, character generation, combat rules, et al.

Shall we throw some numbers around?

Seems like it might need a new rule or two: would a tactical nuke have a "Total Annihilation" area? I'm not sure how many tac nukes are aimed at direct fire/contact detonation, I'd guess few are, air burst for most with delayed detonation for weapons intended to damage underground targets. Is there a current day tactical nuke that's similar to the "Bunker Buster" LGB? How much fallout would it create if it detonated underground? Will the weapon survive the impact to detonate underground?

The warheads would need a radiation value, rules to implement the effect of are already in place. A rule for how much fallout and where it drifted would be needed along with how long it would last.

Following on from the earlier thread where nukes in space were postulated to be less effective as they have no atmosphere to create a shock wave, would there be call to vary the effects based on atmospheric density? I guess in theory this could also be applied to any explosive (are there rules for thermobaric and FAE warheads?)

How far from the blast do you need to be to avoid blindness from the flash? How long will it last?

What else is there?

Edited to add, OK, a little google fu reveals there are nuclear bunker busters so scratch that part of the conversation...

Oh, and no, I don't envisage running a game with nukes but then I don't run games with fusion gun armed grav tanks either and don't remember the last time I ran into one as a player...

IIRC, there was an old (read - very old) White Dwarf article for Classic that had some rules for nukes in it. Might be good to reference that as well.

I just need to throw together something for the small tac nukes in case someone manages to get one at some unlikely point. I'll probably use US mil docs to flesh out the basic parameters compared with listed munitions and game effects. CT Book 4 at least lists out the nuc advancements by TL, down to a 2cm Californium round. Gives no stats but that should be too big a problem.
