Loren Wiseman ill

Loren Wiseman of GDW fame and editor of JTAS over at Steve Jackson Games has just underwent a quadruple bypass following a minor heart attack.

He was discharged from hospital yesterday so that is a good sign

His medical bills are obviously going to be huge. So, as a Traveller fanboy, I wanted to get the word out here (in case you hadn't already heard) and ask if any fellow fans would be able to make a donation to help Loren with his medical bills

If you can help him out with anything at all, contributions can go via PayPal to loren@sjgames.com.

Anything will help. Thanks.

Eric over on the TML is looking into the possibility of raising money towards Loren's medical bills by releasing a compilation of Traveller Deck Plans, I think it's a very good idea and I hope he can manage it

I just wanted to post that fact here in the hope that folks could contact Eric on the TML directly and possibly donate deck plans that they had worked on

No garauntee that this will actually happen but I hope so, its a wonderful idea

Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes and your other kindnesses. My sister drove down from Illinois last week and I am driving her crazy because I am starting to get cranky: I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

On the plus side, she likes the Pinky and the Brain marathon made possible by my friend Richard Kerr loaning me his DVDs.

Medical bills are now $8700 and still rising, for those keeping score.

Just wanted to say that the TML Loren Wiseman Deckplans Project is progressing nicely, people are really getting behind it and there is a lot of positive movement 8)

Latest Update

Here's what's going to happen:

I go to the various creditors and tell them I would love to pay, but that my income stream is highly variable, and I cannot in good faith enter into a payment plan when I can't guarantee I can make the payments. They will discuss it a bit, and eventually hand my debt over to a collection agency, writing me off on their taxes as a bad debt. The collection agency will bug me, but I will tell them the same thing I told the original creditors, and they will proceed to trash my already poor credit rating and eventually sell the debt to another collection agency. Launder, rinse, repeat.

What I need donations for is to cover the future cost of my medication on a monthly basis (for instance: I'm running low on insulin, which I can buy Thursday because of your kind donations), and the various doctor visits to adjust such medication, etc. I am applying to various local assistance groups for the indigent/underemployed, but this could take weeks to even get an appointment to acess my eligability. Meanwhile I have to worry about medicines, rent, utilities, and food (since I can't do much in the way of useful work for the next month or more and my relatives are in about the same fiscal shape I'm in.

I'm tired and I need to go to bed now. Good night all!

Update:

Went in for the 3 weeks post op acessment, and passed with flying colors (most of the colors are now "bruise purple" and fading). Lungs sound good, no sign of infection, and the 7 gauge surgical wire binding my sternum together seems to be holding. I'm off the heavy drugs and popping ibuprofen now, but I just discovered that a month's supply of Lantus-type insulin will run me $105 (and I need one other type in addition).

I've been told I should look into something called "emergency medicaid" to see if I qualify. Anybody have a clue?

I donated a mahogany starship to Marc W. Miller about twenty five years ago. It was a model of my 150-ton scout, the ISS Hercules.

I still have pics and the original deckplans. Would these be appropriate?

Steve

Hi there, I don't see why not, can I post your comment direct to Eric and see what he says, I think the more the merrier

(and something with such a hallowed history should really be a top priority I reckon  )

By the way, I'd like to thank everyone for their good wishes, prayers, magic spells, and animal sacrifices. My 3-week post op acessment says that I am healing faster than average. Evidently it literally does my heart good to have such fans as yourselves.

LOREN WISEMAN UPDATE
TAKEN FROM SJG PAGE

Recent Events
I recently underwent a quadruple bypass operation. I hope the medical professionals among you will forgive me if I bowdlerize a few things as I report on this event for the readers, who I am sure will be interested. I apologize that there are no articles for this issue, but I am still considerably under the weather, and it took me several days to put this short account together.

SUNDAY (1 August)
On Sunday August 1st, I was feeling a little tired and decided not to do my usual Sunday afternoon shopping trip and to postpone my laundry expedition until the next day. I decided that I did need to take out the trash (collection day is Mondays), so I loaded up the bin and wheeled it to the curb.

I dropped it off and had turned to walk back to my apartment door when my right calf began to tingle. After a step or two, every single muscle in my right calf siezed up, and I could not move my right leg. I took a few feeble hops on my left leg and was rewarded with a sudden wrenching pain in my right calf -- worse than any muscle cramp I've ever felt, and the second worst pain ever. Fortunately, one of my neighbors in the fourplex I live in saw my distress, helped me to my porch, and called 911.

One of the paramedics in the responding ambulance turned out to be my nephew, Galen Wasem, who knew the family medical history and something of my own -- Galen made a joke of the coincidence, saying that if I had wanted to see him at work we could have arranged a ride-along -- I needn't have gone to all this trouble.

He noticed that I was cold and clammy, not hot and sweaty on the 100-degree day, took a blood sugar level and started an EKG. He then declared that he was going to treat the incident as a potential heart attack and I was off to the hospital. I expressed my concern was that the leg pain was a DVT (deep vein thrombosis), which can cause a heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism, and Galen acknowledged that might be true, but insisted that my EKG showed problems as well, and that had to remain his main concern.

The ER doctors said he had made the right decision, ordered a series of tests (mostly for my heart, but they did do an ultrasound of my right leg (which eliminated the DVT possibility). Still, my only pain was in my leg, and I felt nothing out of the ordinary in my chest. I was placed under observation and underwent a series of tests. I began receiving the first of a series of calls from friends and family, which I will not cover in detail.

MONDAY (2 August)
The next day (Monday), it was decided to do a catheterization exam, a stress test, and some other procedures. The calf had recovered almost completely-- stiff, no pain , but my blood pressure and glucose levels were very high. My blood work further showed that I had indeed suffered a heart attack and the treadmill and other tests gave the doctors the information they needed for a diagnosis. Diabetes had caused poor circulation in my legs, triggering a cramp. It and high blood pressure masked the crushing chest pain typical of a heart attack, which was why I had felt nothing. I spent Monday recovering from the cath procedure. Last time I had to spend 8 hours flat on my back with a 40-pound sandbag on my hip -- things have improved: no sandbag, and only 6 hours with one leg immobile.

TUESDAY (3 August)
The cardiac surgeon who talked to me said there were several variables, but that he thought there was a good chance that the damage to my heart muscle

LOREN WISEMAN UPDATE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LKW update: I am continuing to make some small progress towards re-building my stamina, but I have discovered that it takes stamina to do that, and I don't always feel up to it. My left leg is still the site of some discomfort where the donor viens were taken out, and both legs are still swollen. I'm getting into the swing of my diabetes regimen. Shoving a needle into myself three imes a day is not as much fun as it sounds (and it doesn't sound like much fun at all). I also get to stick myself with a teeny-weenie lancet to draw a drop of blood for my blood glucose level test several times a day. During my training at the hospital before I was released, I was told I must be very careful not to accidently prick myself with the syringe I just used to inject myself with, but I guess that's just teaching me good biohazard disposal technique. I can now raise my arms over my head for several seconds at a time without causing serious discomfort, but I still have trouble sleeping more than 4 hours at a stretch.

I just wanted to butt in with my own thoughts here,

As a Traveller fanboy I think it is wonderful to see all the support and kindness that people have sent Loren's way so far, he is indeed a treasure, one of our 'Originals', a Game Designer from the Old School and a really nice bloke to boot:beerchug: So seeing folks rally round like this is heartwarming.

I guess my only worry is that people will think everything is alright now and drop off, so I just wanted to take this opportunity to ask that people still keep Loren in their thoughts and if they are able and willing to help (in any way at all) they would be a very good thing.

I have been reading Loren's posts on the STEVE JACKSON GAMES Traveller Forum and my impressions are that while Loren is on the mend he could still do with our support (as I say, it's not my business but I just wanted to put my feelings across is all)

Some more good news folks

Rick Loomis of Flying Buffalo fame is helping to raise funds towards Loren Wiseman's medical bills by giving away sets of this years Origins 4 Kings Poker Deck to folks who donate $10 or more towards Loren Wiseman's medical expenses

This is a wonderful offer and I just wanted to spread the news in case you folks weren't aware of this

-------------------------------------------------------------

notable game designers from the '70's and currently writer for Steve Jackson Games, has recently had a quadruple bypass operation. He is doing well, and you can read about it here: Loren

Sadly, as a freelancer, he has no health insurance, so we are asking his friends and fans of his game designs to donate money to help defray the enormous hospital bills. Send a donation via paypal to loren@sjgames.com

And if you send at least $10, I'd like to reward you with a gift. As you may or may not know, I have for the last three years created poker card decks, where the four kings are four famous game designers. The 2010 deck includes Loren Wiseman as the king of clubs. There are two mostly identical versions of this deck, one with black backs, and one with orange backs. (The other three kings are Rich Banner, Frank Chadwick, and Marc Miller). If you tell me you donated $10 or more, and send me $3 for postage, I will send you BOTH decks (which sell for $5 each).

Click on the link below to send me the postage:
(The link is for two cents. Paypal will tack on a $3 "shipping charge" so the total will end up $3.02)

(This offer good until I run out of decks, or Loren tells me his medical bills are paid!)
