Mongoose
Looking through the Dawn of the Third Age Earth Alliance fleet list in Armageddon and I can't decide on which Omega to take in a 5pts Battle fleet.

Here is what I have planned for an upcoming friendly;

2 Artemis-class Heavy Frigates
Nova- Class Dreadnought
2 Omega-class Destroyers or 2 Omega-class Pulse Cruisers
Poseidon-class Super Carrier

Beams as we all know are great weapons to have in ACTA, but I just love Twin-linked weaponry... especialy with 16AD :D

So I'm mainly looking for advise from EA players who have tried out both types.

Thanks in advance.

Edit, I forgot to add a poll.

I prefer the beam Omega simple coz I can dish out the damage at range and the supporting pulse cannons aren't too bad when you get close either.

If you use the Pulse Variant you really do need to get it into action as soon as!!

as you already have close up covered by the artemis and the nova i would suggest taking both as beam omegas to give you some range, plus as tank said their secondaries arnt that bad either.

... well, I don't play Earth, so my vote for the pulse cannon varient can be ignored if you would like.

But I agree Stonehorse, throwing down 16 dice and then re-rolling the misses is just too good to pass up to me. With the Omega's poor maneuverability, how often do you actaully get to use the Hvy. Lasers? In all honesty, can someone answer that?

The front ones?

As a sniper often enough. with enough initsinking and maneuvering pretty much every time.

The 4 AD beam might not seem like much, but Hyperions go pop so much faster......

Yes Tank has hit the Nail. And something i forgot to mention.

The Omega is a sniper, that wants its target to keep away. The up close firepower is good, but rather for secondary targets. The Omega does not like brawling too much, but is able to hold its own there.

The beam. The Pulse Omega is too slow, too unmaneuverable, and too short ranged (IMHO) to be limited to 12" weapons. enemies of its class will almost certainly be hitting back outside that range easily.

Use both, one to make long range attacks and the other to make the kill at close range. The pulse you will use with the order all power to engine and cover him with the regular omega given the order concetrate fire power and let see what happend. Work for me in the past. :P

Two Novae provide the same twin-linked barrage to the front and carry twice the fighters of a pulse Omega.

Sure (and 2 Novas is a good pick a lot of the time) but those Novas will have a problem with high-hull ships just like the Pulse Omega will. I always go with the standard Omega, those heavy lasers are good to have.

alien...

Omegas and other bore sighted ships can effectively not use CAF due to needing to turn to line up the boresight. It also usually means no use of ALL STOP, APtE and CBD for the same reason. In an 2nd era fleet I do not know of ship that makes good use of CAF above Skirmish.

On the Poll topic...

As others have said you have your brawl squad pretty well chosen. If you are really into twin linked I would consider taking another Nova and a Hyperion with one Omega beam ship. This gives you deeper brawling, more fighters (one extra flight) and the laser power of the double Omega. The new Hyperion in Arm does have 4 more damage points so it should last one more hit than the old ones. This also gives you effectively another sink.

If you are model limited or just want the Poll options, I would take two beam Omegas.

Don't make me list all the situations where you can boresight and CAF at the same time, please

You must have misunderstood me. I was arguing against using a pulse Omega by saying two Novae achieved a better result for the same cost.

@LBH

Really? go on name more than 5!!!

Going round a planet

Engine crit 6

Reactor crit 6

ANything else that puts a ship thats all ready boresighted to speed 0

Engine crit 6 doesn't let you CAF a boresioght: it is "Speed 0, no special actions" ;)

2 more:

Coming through a jump point (if you have AJP, and someone else opened the jump point for you)

2 ships playing chicken (mutual boresights with no need to turn)

Cept an Omega doesnt have AJP

And you cant even use special actions coming through a jump point even if you have AJP and it was opened by someone else. ( I think)

Yes you can :D

Anopther one, if Sheridan is on board you can CAF coming through your own jump point.
