"Look & Feel" computer interface ideas

Spacecraft systems are likely to have a mix of controls.

As noted, touchscreens, reconfigurable displays, etc, are all very shiny, but ultimately there will be a hardwired set of physical controls somewhere. This may not, however, be the primary controls.

I'd suggest you'd get a mix of everything - voice control, push switchs, touch screens, Intellect/1 just spontaneously deciding to do so**.

We're told to assume that storage space on a computer is effectively unlimited for 'idle' software, and (at least by our standards) bandwidth for simple tasks probably is too, as a result, the ability to control virtually anything from any station on the ship (assuming you have the access privilleges) is fair game. For that matter, you could probably have the same operating software networked to some equivalent of an IPhone*.

Biometrics won't as noted, work in a sealed suit - but then the sealed suit could just as easily have biometrics of its own, giving some sort of RFID signal to the ship of "yes, this is dave inside this suit." And, as noted, a wrist tag, badge, bracelet, whatever, can provide a transmitted id code without needing an implant.

** Intellect/1 and Expert Artist (Actor)/3 - do you think that sliding doors in B5 and Crusade hiss open at appropriately dramatic moments by chance?
* Particle beam barrage? We've got an app for that....

RFID cards are in use now. If they're lost, they are just removed from the security access list, the same if the employee is fired.

An RFID chip under the skin of the wrist would be about the size of a grain of rice, and could be removed by just about anybody with a pocket knife.

While there are some cultures that would object to an implanted RFID chip, what are the odds that they use computers too? This chip would be your ID, bank card, and medical record etc..

As for the "pocket knife": That is not as easy as it seems. You have to FIND the bugger first ...
Microwaves might do the trick, the chip should heat up faster than the sur-
rounding tissue. Just cut where it hurts and a blister is forming ...

Oh no problem, just give us the coordinates and we drop a few 120mm mortar shells at the beast
I always thought that the expression "den Rasen sprengen" could lead to
a serious misunderstanding ...

[For those non-Germans: In German the expressions for "to sprinkle the lawn"
and "to blow up the lawn" are identical.]

These are all marvelous ideas, and have helped immensely.

I've started whomping up some test graphics, and when I get something that feels passable I'll post a sneak peek here.

I really appreciate everyone's contribution :)

 I have got to remember that one!

Brilliant, actually. Until Avatar came out, I always had something vaguely LCARS-like in mind for a traveller interface but didn't want to rip something off too blatantly :)

There's also this:

This is kind of OT, but I figure it's my prerogative since I'm the OP :)

We play in the TNE setting, which is also the setting for the film. After Virus, there's a stigma associated with implants, particularly of the data-processing variety. There's less risk associated with a simple RFID implant, but the stigma would still be there, especially in the trailward portions of the Regency
