Lobbying for the USMC LAV

Mongoose
I want to begin my official lobbying push to have Mongoose add the LAV to the USMC forces in BF:E. I know that the Stryker had apparently been planned before being dropped in favor of the EFV. I think the EFV is great, but it serves a very different role from the LAVs. I really like the role and function of the LAR (Ligh Armored Recon) Battalions and would want to base my BF:E force around one.

Presently the LAVs are going through an upgrade program to keep them in the field unitl 2015, the beginning of the scope for BF:E, but their replacement is not planned to be fielded until 2024 and not enough is known about it to put it into BF:E at this time. So, my guess would be that the LAV will see additional upgrades to keep it going to 2024. Here is a great article about the current state of the LAV. The LAV Battalions have been so valuable in Iraq, that the USMC is trying to add 5 additioanl LAV Companies.

Some of the present upgrades for the series includes new fire control and depleted uranium shells for the LAV-25. An upgrade for the LAV-M from the 81mm mortar to a rifled 120mm mortar that the USMC is planning to role out, it will then be called the LAV-EFSS. The LAV-AT is supposed to see a turret upgrade for its TOW missile launcher. There is also an communications upgrade coming for the LAV-C2 command variant, which would serve as a command for the LandWarrior troops.

Also, the only vehicle based AA threat the USMC posseses is the LAV-AD which packs a 25mm gatling gun and a quad Stiner launcher!

The LAV seems like a win for Mongoose from a cost standpoint. They could save on modelling costs with one chassis providing the USMC forces with a APC, AA platform, indirect fire support, and command vehicle. It seems pretty likely they will still be in action in the scope of the game.

So, Mongoose, can I get my hopes up for the LAV making it into BF:E or should I make other plans?

The basic LAV might also find itself useful for other factions as well as the USMC. Variants of this and the original Swiss Mowag vehicle on which I believe it is based are widely exported (there is even a UK version built by GKN)

More digging around.

The USMC just bought 281 of a new LAV variant, the LAV-A2. The LAV-A2 is a Replacement of the LAV-25 with a new engine, suspension, armor/protection and turret. They also procured 394 new turrets to upgrade exisiting LAVs. Read more here:

So, it is likely that this new LAV will be the mainstay of the LAR Battalions in the timeframe of BF:E. PLEASE Mongoose, put them in!

im so glad im not the only one who said the LAVs would still be around

anywho, no more gloating from me :D

hope MGP does do some LAVs though

I want LAVs too! A bit of work with a knife and paint brush and an Australian force becomes a reality -

USMC Abrams
USMC LAV
EFTF SAS
USMC Infantry
EFTF Tiger Helicopter

Too much to hope for a Bushmaster or F-35 but the rest will do. Then all we need to do is put PLA soldiers on the back of Technicals to make up some Indonesians and we're fighting the West Papuan war due to start in 2010.

I'd also put together a USMC force with LAVs, because I can't bring myself to put an EFV on the table. It looks like a cross between a dump truck and an ice cream van.

The LAV chassis is pretty common throughtout the world. Even the Saudis field them, which would allow 3 of the 4 armies in the game to make use of the model, although with slight differences in game capabilities.

This PDF of a 2006 USMC powerpoint presentation claims the Corp will be using them through 2024. They will definitely be active in the timeframe of this game.

I agree, the LAV-25 is my favorite IFV/APC due to it's hardiness and modularity. It's hard to knock out and it packs a ridiculous punch, it's fast, amphibious, and brings Marines to your front door. I also read the USMC plans on using them for at least 20 more years - and even then, I doubt they'll just stop. Like the ubiquitous M113 - everyone's got 'em, everyone's using 'em, and they're good at what they do.

So, yeah, a vote from me for the LAV. I have the Kitech 1/48 LAV-25 and LAV-AT, and of course I'll be using them in Battlefield Evo, with or without a Mongoose model.
