little known Pak facts

Now that the Paks are up (and boy, they are nice!), I thought I´d post all those little pieces of info about the race as a whole that I´ve collected over years of watching the series (note that some of these things have been cohntradicted in part or full in later AOG and MGP publications).

Nothing of it is actually of consequence for anyone, but maybe it helps someone out there to get into the character of our favourite carrion eaters... and it makes me feel a little less funny collecting infos about squidheads, because I´ve finally put them to some use.

Pak´Ma´Ra...:

- can see in the ultraviolet spectrum

- have an "approved list" stating which food they are allowed to eat (guess it´s a long list... )

- can digest just about everything, with the odd exception of fish

- have at least one aggricultural colony close to Abbai space (in season 5)

- consider themselves "chosen of god"

- have beautiful singing voices, but only sing as part of their religious rituals

- have a hump which is not a real hump at all...

- also call their homeworld (or their entire space) "Pak´Ma" (Lyta refers to having worked there when looking for a job in season 4)

- need special toilets unusable for any other race

- refuse to speak any language other than their own

Did I forget anything?

Sure thing! Looking at how enthusiastic you are about it, I guess I should preorder one as soon as that is possible, shouldn´t I? :D (any chances of getting a signed copy?)

Signed copy? If you come to Origins or GenCon (if it is out by then, of course), I'd be happy to!

But I won't be taking any trips to Germany anytime soon, I'm afraid. :)

Every time I see the new Pak'ma'ra ships, I keep thinking that CVS bought out the Pak'ma'ra.(CVS uses yellow and red on their sales tags.)

Why do you think they use plasma weapons. They put an egg timer by the gunnery station....

"Weapons Officer - medium rare if you please!"

Rest assured that I won't be using that hideous yellow on my ships, nor will I be using other race's ships in my fleet. That smacks of AOG-era shortcuts. Mongoose needs to crank out original Pak ships and not take the easy way out.

Unfortunately this is one of those things from the series...

The only Pak'Ma'Ra ship shown was in fact a Warbird/Sunhawk (can't remember which, it wasn't yellow though)...

Therefore it is canon that the Pak'Ma'Ra use at least Drazi ships if not others as well (Admitedly AoG ignored this...).

I can agree on the Gaim however, that was pretty lazy (I could understand using a few bought hulls but they seemed to have such a huge fleet based on the number of different ship types they had you would have thought they could build their own.)

as far as i can remember the drazi Drazi ship used by the Pak on the show was green.

aog and their colour schemes were variable.... pretty good where you had screen evidence, bad to dire when it came to their home designed ones.

having the Gaim just buying their ships was a bit of a let down, i always thought the Gaim should have got the Pak ships with the Pak getting a mixture of the other race ships given their trading nature. (insert "shrugs shoulders" emoticon here)

reply to original post: Pak have appeared in porn movies, once suitably... "enhanced". as seen in Crusade.

It's remarkable what you can do with technology....

As noted in the other thread, ressurecting the plasma cruiser or carrier as a battle-level ship is a possibility - the problem is figuring out a viable role for the model; the Urik'Hal is the biggest armed merchantman, the Pshul'Shi is the convoy defense monitor, and the Porfatis isn't exactly a fighter - so would they really use a carrier as such (besides which, unlike the cruiser it's a pretty naff model in my opinion)?

Pretty much all Pak trading ships will carr Q-40 so the idea of a secure courier is out - every cargo is bloody valuable so there wouldn't be one substantially more so.

Possibly a dredger/salvage ship might be an idea, given the Pak'Ma'Ra tendancy to scavenge mechanical carrion as well as food?

The Thar'not'ak looks almost like it's equipped with something intended to focus near to it given the 'pincers' and the design looks just flat enough to suggest it's designed to suspend the carcass of another starship underneath.

A salvage ship would probably carry the inevitable high damage capacity/decent armour/reasonable number of plasma batteries of most Pak-equipped ships; but instead of Torpedos I can imagine it carrying equipment and personnel for cutting up and scavenging bits of derelicts;

~ Slightly higher troops capacity (which for a Pak'Ma'Ra ship means Troops 2)

~ Plasma Torch - front arc, close range (8" or similar), Precise, Super AP and pretty powerful

~ Gravetic Shifter (or 'Plasma Net' or similar named weapon with the Gravetic Shifter trait)

~ Higher engine capacity for towing a derelict, so marginally faster and a bit more manouvrable than the Urik'Hal when not doing so.

I like the idea of the salvage ship, good thinking :) and good choice of weaponary too, plus that little bit harder troop value :)

Two details from the RPG: They don't eat Vree because they make them sick and they don't eat Brakiri because they charge them for the corpses !
