4x New Orleans Cruisers
and
3x Fletcher Destroyers.

My 5 point raid...

3 x Pensacola-class Cruisers

And I have ordered a couple of Iowa-class Battleships... just in case...

Looks good. If you know the other guy isn't playing subs you can swap the DDs for 2 Pensacolas. The Pensacola is a mighty fine ship.

Here's what I played last week, Raid/5:

1xNew York
2 Pensacolas
1 Portland
3 New Orleans

vs.

Nagato
2 Takao
1 Mogami

At the end of the game it came down to my New York (in pretty good shape) vs. a crippled Nagato (like 2 damage left) and a crippled Takao. In the last turn the Nagato crippled the New York, resulting in it losing its torpedo belt. A torpedo spread from the Takao took the New York down. Good game, it came down to the New York's loss of the torpedo belt. That's the first game of VaS that I've lost.

Here's what I'm playing tomorrow, Raid/5 vs USN (have no idea what hes playing):

1xNagato
3xTakao
( a very nasty fleet)

Second game (if the KM player shows up):

2x New York
3x Fletcher
(serious firepower, might change at the last minute to put 2 Pensacolas in)

EDIT: looks good Court Jester. The USN really does shine at Skirmish. Watch out for torpedoes.

The idea with the USN cruiser is skirt the battlefield at extreme ranges... I don't want to be getting too close... :P

THe 20-30" range is their sweet spot... plunging fire and no to hit penalties...

actually you're -1 to hit between 20 and 30 inches.

Indeed you are right but all of those Cruisers have radar. Whicn negates the -1 for long range on detected ships. Which is fun. So you are potentially not getting the -1 to hit whilst the enemy will have the -1 (unless they have radar as well).

However making and keeping track of 9 ships radar and what they have detected is a nightmare so we just roll to detedct a ship if it is fired upon instead of as soon as it is placed on the table.

OK, so obviously I've been missing something when playing my americans, I didin't realize the benefit of radar during good weather.

so, before shooting, you roll to detect all enemy ships (each, at 3+) and get a +1 to hit at long and extreme ranges. indeed, it my be simpler to determine ships at are not detected than detected.

sounds good to me...

Indeed, a nasty fleet! I love the Takao class ship. Run them up the gut at Flank speed and get within 20" of the long lance torpedos and unleash devestation! Hopefullly with enemy ships to the starboard and port sides.

And the Nagato can sit back at range and pummel enemy ships with its full broadside. The Nagato class can put out some pain and the 5+ with Armoured Deck means it can take some damage in return.

There were only two Pensacola class and 2 Portland class cruisers built. In our group, we are limited to the number that were actually built. Are others putting any limits on the ships that can be taken?

Thanks,
Dannie

Thats all fine and dandy and if playing a historical scenario or game I would be all for correct numbers of ships. But for pick up games down the club we just use the fleet lists as is... :P

I've been looking at historical Soviet lists. These are all 5 point Raid.

Baltic Fleet
2x Gangut
Kirov
Maxim Gorky
2x Tashkent (Using Leningrad models - very similar specs)
4x Gnevnyi

Black Sea Fleet
Gangut
Kirov
Krasnyi Kafkaz
2x Profintern
Maxim Gorky
3x Tashkent
Gnevnyi

Northern Fleet
Archangelsk
Murmansk
Tashkent
6x Gnevnyi

Pacific Fleet
2x Maxim Gorky
2x Tashkent
10x Gnevnyi

If I was playing a pickup game though:
Sovietski Soyuz
Gangut

I think this last one might be a little more effective than the historical ones.

Personally I stick to the number that were actually built for my pick up games. There's nothing to stop you from taking 10 Pensacolas if you want. If I were running a campaign I would limit each class to what existed initially with more able to be put into play by spending resources.

To each his own, its up to your group.

That's exactly what happened today. Long Lance salvoes took out 2 ships without any supporting fire. The previous incarnations of that fleet I've played used a Mogami or two (because I have some painted) but the 3 Takaos were pretty nice.

Just spotted this:
RN 5 point RAID.
2 Queen Elizabeth-class Battleships
3 J/K/N class Destroyers

There's no radar with any of these, do you not consider radar useful for a competitive tourney type list?

I've taken a very similar list with the addition of two Norfolks instead of the second QE. Mainly because of the radar.

5 point Raid

5x Gangut. Cheesy, as only four were built, and I doubt they'll be Raid ojnce Order of Battle is out, but I'll make the most of it while they last.

in terms of tournaments and dated lists; are the restrictions to the ships you can use only in terms of build date, or does sinking date figure as well??

Can you use a ship for a 1941 list that was built in 1939 and sunk in 1940?
regards
Si
