Legend. Playing with miniatures?

I have been reading It is going to be several changes in combat in order to do it faster and perhaps more deadly.

If I had to do my WishList, I would like to have combat rules to play with miniatures. Rules about movement in combat that I think it´s the worst in RQII.

Maybe they could be optional, but I need combat rules with miniatures to jump to this rpg

... ? I always play with miniatures and it works perfectly well for MRQ2 as it is now. All it takes is willingness to use ones own reason. For example there are no rules for Attacks of Opportunity, but really need there be? I think any reasonable DM should be able to gauge when your doing something weird enough near an enemy that he can spend a CA to hit you before you're gone.

I dont´t agree. I don´t need AoO... but the movement in MRQ II is not very suitable to play with minis. If you have many house rules you can do it, but If You apply only the rules in the core book, It is very difficult to play (for me).

You can move 8 metres (4 squares) in a round. You don´t have a movement action.

You do have a movement action? It's in the action list. But, it is only for moving without doing nothing else. This was elaborated here on the forum and we hope that its included in the legend system. You can move during any of your actions, as long as you don't move more than 8 metres per round. So you could spend 1 CA to attack and the move the 4 metres to your target and attack him on the same CA.

I agree that the movement rules needs clearing up, and we have often discussed this on the forum. But that the lacking clarifications should specifically impair miniatures I can't see. I have simply applied common sense to the rules and I have no problem playing with miniatures at all.

But clarifications would be nice. Also, if some people do believe the system is hampering play with miniatures and thus won't buy the game, then the rules should be clarified no matter if this is the case or not - as the new target audience for Legend is an age group used to playing with miniatures.

What size hex or square do you guys use? 1m, 2m? More?

Depends on the situation. Standard is 1vs1 meter, as most of my combat take place in dungeons or alleys etc.

But simply tell the players that a quare is another size when the fight calls for it.

LOL... obviously. But as most players will have an 8m movement I don't see why 2m wouldn't work well in many wilderness combat situations. I agree that 1m movement makes the most sense when dealing with building/town environment.

Yep, works fine both ways.

I previously used 1 meter squares & hexes, but switched to 2m to keep combat on a reasonable-sized mat. We use poker chips to keep track of movement during each melee round:
* 2 poker chips allows a character to move one square while doing a non-move action
* 1 poker chip allows a character to move 1 square while doing a move action, and allowing reactive actions (e.g. parry or evade)
* 1 poker chip allows a character to move 2 squares while doing a move action if they forego any reactive actions.

Clearly a house rule, the movement rates vary a little from the core book, but it's a simple system that we can (mostly) remember.

Oh, and I'm using the 3-for-2 rule for moving diagonally when using squares.

We use 1sq =1mtr. Move more than 1/2 your MOV on a CA and you can't do anything else. For reach and so on we use the following:

  • Defender - Medium(Sq 1)
    Touch/Short (Sq2)
    Medium (Sq3)
    Long (Sq 4)
    VeryLong (Sq5)

Closing and disengaging is by the book: in essence an attacker with a medium weapon can effectively reach 3mtrs (1mtr or so on average for the weapon, 1mtr natural reach for an average size humaniod with an extra metre for the lunge/step or whatever, which is not unrealistic).

It's not 100% but it works for us.

Lol cthuludarren was it you who made the miniatures rules? I remember it was someone who whas a regular on this forum, maybe sdavies? I remember now, I copied the rules to my computer for personal use, I will see if I can put them back up.

This might be my rules. Not online much at moment due to work and don't have bookmark to hand but if you search for "b5quest" and follow links to house rules you will find my mini rules there.

Thanks Damon. It's the usual grab bag of stuff that I've been doing. Looking forwards to seeing how Legend pans out. Maybe when my work quietens down at the end of the year I'll be able to update it properly.
