Banded Mongoose
Last night Hiromoon and myself had another enjoyable round of combat, with my USMC facing off against his PLA in a wonderfully desroyed urban theater. I had 2 Abrams, plus a full infantry squad + a fire team, for a total of 13 models at 1105 points, against his 2 Type 99's and 2 infantry squads, for 22 models at 1080 points.
The game started off with true army intelligence (meaning my marines intelligence feeds failed again), so Hiro went first. He got rather unlucky when in my first turn an Abrams killed a 99 with a shot to the front armor, in cover, with a lucky roll of natural 10. In my opinion, this was probably the turning point of the game. There were fairly even shooting fights scattered across the board, with both sides taking casualties. Hiro's second 99 took 2 failed saves before finally being eliminated, but in the process was able to wound one of the Abrams.
The PLA was shattered around the 5th turn (I think). Had the first 99 not been eliminated with that lucky shot in the first round, I think the game would have quite possibly turned out different. Both 99's had nice fields of fire, all of the infantry were in cover (requiring my marines to roll 6's to hit). The tanks should have been able to trade shots for a couple turns, but with the first eliminated it freed an Abrams to hunt infantry (which isn't a good thing!)
While the end results look like the PLA took a bad beating (the marines lost 3 infantry, including a corporal that left them confused for a turn), it could have easily gone the other way if a couple of the dice and tumbled a different way.
Really could have used some Shadows...
