Lankhmar

Mongoose
Will there be a forum here soon?

Also, is the book itself enough to play, or does one need to also by some other game mechanics book?

I am guessing no, though the Lankhmar setting can be discussed under the RuneQuest forum, since it is using the RuneQuest rules for play.

Follow-up question:

Why publish Lankhmar with RQ rules instead of d20? Lankhmar doesn't exactly strikes me as a setting that could exist on Glorantha. I'm sure Mongoose is eager to.. ah.. induce gamers to purchase all its RQ rulebooks but still...

The new RuneQuest is not identical with Glorantha. You can run nearly every fantasy setting with the rules provided in the basic titles series (rulebook, companion, monsters being the most prominent ones here).

I'd say that to run a Lankhmar campaign you should at least own the core rules and the companion.

My guess is, that Lankhmar, having a history of being an (A)D&D product back then, was chosen and aquirred by the Mongoose's in order to get some dissapointed old time (A)D&D players a nudge to give the RuneQuest system a go. :) Might even be working :)

It's only the very early RQ which were linked in with Glorantha, but even then the rules were quickyl freed from a dependency and adapted for other environments (Elric, Call of Cthulhu, Ringworld, etc). The MRQ base rules don't have anything in them which is pure Gloranthan, though some approaches switch nicely into Glorantha.

::shrugs:: I've run loads of very successful non-Gloranthan games with RQ, and still do. :)
