Lankhmar City Poster Map

Glorantha Second Age book didn't come with a poster map, just with downloads. So I'd say probably no map with Lankhmar as well. But we have been moaning about the missing of fold out or poster maps, maybe we'll get lucky -)

It's not too often I'm given to singing the praises of a TSR product but if you're interested in a map of Lankhmar try to get your mits on TSR's old Lankhmar City of Adventure. This was easily one of their finest releases.

It included a poster sized city map with greyed out blocks in the centre of large residential and commercial areas. These were filled in using a seperate booklet of carefully prepared blank geomorphs which the GM could complete to his or her own preferences and plop into place as desired.

This was such a good and well executed system (Kind of an expansion of the Maze neighbourhood idea from Thieves World if anyone remembers it) that I still use it occasionally in my own RQ game world if players visit one of its few large metropolises. It also tied in very carefully with Lieber's books and looked great! (I'm looking at it now and reliving some happy crusty old gamer memories...)

I used to play a lot of AD&D, but Lankhmar: City of Adventure was far, far from a high point for TSR.

It also featured a lot of mistakes, extremely plain writing and a system that fits the Lankhmar setting much in the way a 20th Century US aircraft carrier still in active service fits in, say, my favourite Stormtrooper tea mug.

I read that endlessly while I was writing Lankhmar, primarily using it as The Guide Of How Not To Write About Lankhmar. The only way I can see it being recommended is because of the map and because it was the only Lankhmar game out there.

It also had a female Sheelba. That one I can forgive, seeing as Leiber did it once, too. But still.

Maps rocked, though.
