Just played my first game of VAS...

...and was impressed.

As a ACTA veteran, the rules were real easy to pick-up.

It might just be me, but the Smoke SA seems way too powerful. My friend and I were playing that the smoke counter enveloped the center point and trailed behind the ship via the counter, but are going to try using the rule that if LOS passes through the front 180 degrees of a Smoked ship in later games.

What does everyone else think?

This is already the rule. Smoke counters are placed with the leading edge of the counter on the center point of the ship (VaS p.11), not enveloping the center point.
