is there any credit given if I buy a MGT PDF and then come back and want the printed book

If I am uncertain about a MGT book, and buy the PDF, really like it and decide it deserves print-space on my bookshelf, is there any credit for having already bought the PDF, given that if I buy the book initially it comes with the PDF included...

No. You do get the PDF with the physical book, or you can get Traveller Core, Companion, Adventure Class Ships, Small Craft Catalog, and the Robot handbook at Bundle of Holding for $17.95 right now.

"Try before you buy" is just that - something you are allowed to do before you part with any money. Once you have paid then the transaction is usually finished.
If you want more certainty about a book purchase before you select the "buy" button, you could turn to any of the various communities on the social media platforms, and ask for experience/advise. There are Traveller groups on Facebook, Discord and Reddit. Or, you could look at the product previews on DriveThruRPG.
Those will help you make a more informed decision. Or sometimes YouTube have product reviews for RPG books. Or you could just be an "adventurer" and buy blind or back a Kickstarter publication. The Kickstarters are usually the best way to see an official video of a new publication, before you need to pledge any of your money. The drawback of the Kickstarter is that they only happen once in a product lifecycle, and then it is all over.

I am the other way round, I have a couple of Traveller books without the PDFs and I wished I owned both - but, it is not going to happen retrospectively.

I *know* you get the PDF Free with the (more expensive) printed book.
I was hoping for a "try before you buy": buy and read the PDF, if you like the PDF, upgrade to the printed book.
If youa re looking for a try before you buy there is the Explorer, or Merchant Editions available on the web site fro $.99 It is a little short on character build options. It does give you everything you need to run a game though.
