Is the idea for Dune dead?

The rights to Dune has been up in arms for ages. Though I kinda remember something that the folk who own the rights to it would consider it after the next few books are published. There's one on Ebay just now (no idea if I'm allowed to link this kinda thing sorry, let me know and I'll see about removing it) at http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=dune+rpg

If I had £150 spare I'd probably get it myself.

I think the real answer to when a Dune book will be out would be "no time soon".

I was on a site where Brian Herbert anwered a few qustoins, in response to Dune on one of his new books, and said it would be hard to give the rights for a Dune RPG because some of the rights belonged to a video game company that went under (Cryo I think). I'll see if I can find a link.

I am all in favour, as many others here are, for Dune.

It would be nice if someone from mongoose made a statement here about it, but it looks like someone will have to PM to find out the real story.

Ok, if the rights are all messed up, and there is still intrest in the idea then are there any people that would be intrested in wargaming the topic? Is there a groop of websites?

To continue the topic, on the note of a wargamer.

Ive been working on this idea for a while and I have had a hard time coming up with rules. The new combat evolution seems to be a good starting point, but the miniatures are the hard part.

Urban Mamoth and Warzone (Now owned by Prince August IR) produce models that could pass for harkonen troops. But im having a hard time finding models that are good for freemen. Atradies ground troops are easy to find. Plenty of models that could "Pass" for them. But Freemen are the problem.

Stargrunt does some vechicles that could pass for the "Hoppers" and other light sand vechicles in their 25 mm range.

I invision the game working on a smaller model count, perhaps 20 a side. 25 to 28mm.

Anyone else given this some thought? Im looking to share ideas. Perhaps even have a descussion about it. Photos of past projects?

For fremen, maybe look towards more medieval arab stuff. Not sure who does that in "heroic" scales, though.
20 and 25mm shouldn't be an issue

Rules shouldnt be too hard to throw together. Its mostly medieval skirmish, with a few guns. I'd pass on the evolution rules, since they dont cover troop quality, which is about the only difference in the Dune-iverse.

The differences from midevil combat would be sheilds and associated weapons like the slip tip and kindjal, weirding fighting, and the occasional mauala pistol. A rules for big ass explosions when a lasgun hits a shield.

I've always felt that miniatures combat in the Duneiverse would kind of violate the flavor of the setting. Maybe some detailed one-on-one combat rules but not mass combat. Roleplaying sure. Just not mass-combat games.

Maybe some GW Haradrim would work with some conversions.
I know there is an eastern flavour to the novels, but is there any actual indication they look heavily arab?
Also, how are they drawn in dune artwork or in the encyclopeia that was released a few years back?
Also, has anyone checked what they lookied like from the several licensed games? I have, and they don't look too Arab like suit wise, it actually looks a bit tech in the one that Cryo release a few years back before they went under.

platoon to company level battles take place all the time in the books. Plenty of scope there. Throw in battles between noble houses in the setting, and you have a lot of material

I just re-watched the stuff that Sci-Fi did and im thinking that perhaps arab miniatures will not do it for the Freemen. The Freemen wear Stillsuits covered with fabric. Im starting to wonder if there is any way to get around this without sculpting the cloaks onto the Freemen, as the "techno" suit under the desert garb is hard to pull off. Ie, finding a guy in a skinsuit and greenstuffing him to death.

Im looking at the fights where the Harkonen are ambushed while investigating spice pockets. Im thinking that these small desert skermishes are the primary battles that should be focused on. Im begining to wonder if the number of models a side should be reduced to 15ish instead of 20ish. Forces would start in farly close proxmity, within 18-20 inches of one another as many of these situations are "ambuish" snarieos. But there is a scene in the extended edition where Paul is asked to investigate a guild member captured in a raid on a bunker. Im begining to wonder how this might be pulled off, as the sizes of these raids vary a great deal. The Harkonen always seem to be greatly out-numbered.

Another thing that I have been doing is compiling data on troopers and fights taken directly from the text and I am thinking that someone must have already done this. The project is rather painfull, but at the same time I dont want to drift too far from the universe as Frank Herbert laid it out, rather then what his sucessor has compiled.

It seems the more I play around with this idea the harder it becomes to finish. I begin to question the wisdom of persuing a customized wargame, as there is so much groundwork to be done. Seriously hats off to Victory at Sea and Starship Troopers. I hate to think of the units droped and ideas that game develpers go through.

So I think that is all she wrote. I thank everyone who contributed ideas

I just got the thinking, after watching the old movie with Sting.. you could use the Van Saar mini's from GW's Necromunda game for Fremen.

To hell with GW.

If you want to just play a game using dune factions, use the Vor the maelstrom army creation chapter. There you can create yout own army list, and use the system, which is for skirmish sci fi anyway. there should be links on the ral partha web site for it. I own the rulebook. Great game.

Just stick to one or two main units like in starship troopers: power suit squads, lieutenants, ncos, i.e, Sardaukar, Sardaukar officer, and give them loads of options.

Again I repeat all this work has been done for the old video game. I mentioned this a few times and nobody seems to have thought of it.

Vor was an excellent game. Heck, you could play Fremen vs Neo-soviets if you wanted to

As far as video games, are you thinking of the old half-adventure half-strategy one or the shite sequels ?

Buy Vor. Now. Anyone who doesn't have it should. Its in the pantheon of good and mighty sci fi games alongside the likes of Void, Infinity, Warmachine and SST.

Add Warzone and Stargrunt to that list and I'd agree :) (not a Void fan, personally though)

I really wish a mod could merge all the various Dune threads into one.

On to the news: I have struck out with the Dune game. The perception I got from the license-holder is that they are not interested, and the appeals are falling on deaf ears. I tried back in 2000 and tried again this month, hoping that the situation would be different.

I've mentioned on this board the work I've done on a Dune game: release schedule, rules outline, SKUs assigned, sales projections, discussion with distributors and manufacturers, etc. In short, I have a full business plan. The demand is obviously there. It's very much marketable.

Unfortunately, getting the license has been the stumbling block at every turn.

Sorry, guys.

Bum. Real pity that.
