Cosmic Mongoose
I'm noticing more and more people coming on complaining about their fleets, some arguments have justification, some have little to none. Is anyone really actually happy with their fleet choice and stats. A lot of complaints come from WAHHH, my fleet is weak at priority X. or WAHH, I can't beat race Z.

It might come as a shock, but um, well, tactical deficienceies based upon race philosophy are probably the reasons, but anyway, back to my point.
DO YOU LIKE YOUR FLEET

Narn, I live them, sure they are limited with boresight, but thats part of the challenge, and they have dull Raid ships, but then they have Gems like the Ka'Toc, and some more specialised ships like the var'Nic moving from their usual philosophy, not to mention excelent anti ship fighters, and the best anti fighter weapon in the game. I don't think they are the strongest fleet by a long way, but they are cool nonetheless.

Drakh I was hugely dissapointed when I read the book, the amazingly fragile hulls are only marginally set off by the GEG, however they are clearly a finesse fleet, and used properly can cause utter havoc. I need to be in the right frame of mind to play them, but model design issues aside, they have grown on me. I still, personally, don't rate the GEG highly enough to warrant a swiss cheese hull, but you take the punches and get on with it.

see, acceptance of weaknesses, and not whinging. go on, give it a try, whats GOOD about your fleet? this post may have branched into 13 unrelated areas, It's my birthday damnit, I can do that :-)

I love my White Stars. The ISA is clearly a finesse fleet but those dodging, dancing little devils are great. They may not be what they were in SFoS but thet are still better than in the original rules.

I also enjoy my EA fleet. Getting the Omega's boresight in can be a pain but with a few Olymuses, it isn't a problem. The Olympus and Nova are two ships I love too, the both have great all round fire-power and can take a real pounding.

I like my fleet.

Minbari, when SFoS came out I was quite apprehensive about Nials at 1 flight per wing. But fighters were generally poor value overall so it didn't matter. With Armagedon and the changes to fighters and Stealth it has pulled a one of the safety nets out from the fleet. I can no longer wade into the enemy with impunity trusting to my Stealth to cover for mistakes, I need to hone my tactics some more, and find some new ones. As for the ships, Who'd want to be on the opposite side of a Sharlin. One of the screen icons from the show and seriously deadly in the game. Morshin carriers are now excellent choices again due to all the Nials they carry. Tinashis are a vicious Battle choice. And I still would not want to be on the receiving end of a Tigara when it's right up close and personal. The Minabri have some of the best ships in the game. But such quality comes at a price, you need to fight at the high priority levels.

The Minbari flet is not an easy one to use well, and thats why I like it. It can cut an enemy fleet apart with Neutron Lasered surgical precision. And there is always that feeling of dread in the back of your mind when you have to go up against a Sharlin.

Would I change anything? Perhaps Twin-Linking the Neshatan's Fusion Cannon, putting more troops on the Torotha and more than 1 Nial per Patrol point. Nothing I really can't live without.

I like most of the things about the Centauri. They have some real heavy-hitter ships but some are just not worth taking over other ships at the same PL. That's basically the only beef I've got with them. Well, that and the weakness in terms of fighters. They're good dogfighters but don't stand out against EA and Minbari fighters, and are markedly weaker against ships than EA and Narn fighters. Given that the Centauri view fighters as cover for capital ships you'd expect more fighters on ships than we get.

Otherwise it's pretty good to be a fan-head... 8)

I'm pretty happy with the ISA, looking forward to using the new Armageddon ships (Though slightly miffed that the Victory went up to Armageddon it DOES belong there)
No real complaints.

Well I was already more or less playing crusade EA before the fleet split so Im actually really pleased with the split lists and love my fleet. All that hull 6 and interceptory goodness and you can take an absolute mauling from non beams without really noticing it. Combine that with excellent fighters and some very nasty high powered beams and youve got a very dangerous fleet. The one thing I WOULD change is to put the Warlock back to the tourney version (ie tourney stats and War level (or at least the SFoS version)).

Minbari I love my Minbari fleet, it was always my favourite and I just love the design of the ships but I had taken to not fielding it as I just found the game too dependant on stealth rolls with them. Not any more Im happy to say! I still think the stealth rules could be done better but theyre vastly improved over what they USED to be :) Sure you suffer below raid but you can truly dominate at War and god help anyone that faces you at Armageddon level (well except perhaps the first ones...)

I play Narn and though I´m a beginner there are things I have already noticed. I´ve seen the next from the campaign we are playing.

Narn: Well, if I keep the game at low levels I have indeed an advantage. At skirmish level or lower I am better than anyone, and even inmmune to ambushes. Big ships are good also excep in raid. I don´t like the G´Quan either but it´s not so bad. A good reliable fleet.

Centauri: Similar to narn but imho slightly better at bigs and slightly worse at lows. I think the F arcs and the speed and maneu. make them a little better than mine. Of course this compensates because mine are luckier and braver. And my pilots don´t wear those ridiculous haircuts.

Mimbari: I think even now they are the best fleet. I see a lot of mimbari players complaining about the changes, but their firepower at long range in high level battles just astonished me. Yesterday a 10 battle points mimbari fleet totally destroyed an equal shadow fleet losing only one battle and one raid ships. They have stealth, good anti-fighter and best fighters in the game...
I´ve seen in my experience as wargamer people gifted with the best tools tend to complain more then anyone in every game. Perhaps they are so used to advantage that every bad turn seems a tragedy for them.

EA: I think it´s not bad, but difficult to play. Right tools for the right job seems to be the key with this one. I think. Everything depends on the scenario.

Drakh: Have not seen very much of these, only two medium battles, but it seems to me they are not easy to play either, or better they are easy to play against.
But in certain scenarios they excel.

Shadows: seems to me they are seriously handicapped. Their high ship value makes them go for the big battles, but a big fleet combining fire can beat them even before they come to the close range of their terrible weapons.
In campaign they have to be very careful. again they have to go for big gambles, but they can´t easily restore from a bad turn.

So I think every fleet has it´s goods and bads, with two exceptions: Shadows seem to me one step backwards others, and mimbari seems to me one step forwards... this doesn´t mean they can´t be beaten, but you can´t relay on the usual and you are not going to go away without a scar or two. For me the game is balanced, more or less.

Do I like my fleet? (narn) well, they are not as good as the mimbari, but they are good enough for me. I can win anyone, I think. Anyone can beat me, of course, but that´s the fun isnt it?

EA is a good Fleet, There all solid and balanced. 8)

But the Crusade Era indeed suffers from poor War choises and an out of date Skrimish choise.
:?
Vorlons are very powerfull in their Armageddon update, quite the opposite from their weak SFOS stats.

Narn are a good fleet, plays like EA, without the interceptors and with the E-mines of course :D

Centauri are a bit on the overpowered side, with lots of hull points and many hull6 ships.

Mimbari are a good fleet who need to keep their foes a a distance for maximum effect.

No experience with shadows...

And the League has its obvious weakness. That's why they are the League.

I love Narn, always liked G'Kar in the show. So i was perfectly sold for them.

I dont just like them, im not just contemd with them. Im perfectly loyal to them. I perfectly trust them. To carry on despite heavy damage.

I totally like most of the ships. My brother even sold me on the Sho'Kov. (5 out of 8 hits dodged, twice in a row).

Raid choices are mostly rock solid. Kill a Rongoth, puuleeeze. Even a Dag'kar has made me capture a Victory.

I havent tried all ships yet, but practically every time they give a great showing.

Now my other fleet. Centauri is different. I really like to play them. But sometimes i feel bad about using certain ships. Mostly the 'lets try them out' factor, and they partially evil. (Must be the Drakh influence). Not as bad as a Sag, but its hard to choose ship i like the look from. Vorchans are a tad bit weak, to be used in true fleets.

Suffolk cheese was the issue cheese of the Royal Navy up to about the 1740s; it was discontinued, and replaced with Gloucester, because under certain conditions- like four or five months in cask at sea- it hardened and congealed into a substance with a consistency not far off rawhide. 'Beating somebody to death with a sharpened wedge of Suffolk cheese' really isn't that much of a metaphorical stretch, and I am fairly convinced my Dilgar use it as pulsar ammo.
For manoeuvrability and ability to respond to a developing situation, they are second only to the White Star Fleet. For tactical play, for precision and finesse in exploitation, mutual support and coverage- unsurpassed. For close range butchering power, unbelievable.

I Like my EA fleets well enough, fine they've bin split into 3 Era's (a tad unfair I feel) but they have some nice ships, i love the Artemis (not gonna say anything about the "awaiting to be nerfed" Sag  ) The Olympus is a nice skirmish level ship as well. Of course the whole bricks in space theme works for me too  The Marathon is a nice spangly addition to the fleet with ace manouvering and a lovely Primary weapon. Furies are now where they should be in the space combat heirarchy so no longer do you just field them as forlorn hopes. Yup, there are days its goof to be EA

I love my ISA fleet, with the notable exception of the WS Gunship I reckon they are all pretty much on the money with regards to playability, challenge, etc.
My Drakh, I agree pretty much with Hiffano, most of them I´m happy with completely. The Carrier / Motherships are a little bit off but not so much as to make them unplayable. I´m keeping my fingers crossed that the ACTA writers liaise with the B5 RPG writers and introduce a few of the other Drakh hulls, particularly the shield ship as they can only enrich the Drakh and will make the aforementioned Carrier and Motherships more playable.

I Love the Vorlons!

Brutal, damage soaking killers!!!!! (until their ships get singled out and destroyed that is).

CHARGED ENERGY PULSE RULES! (Until masses of Thunderbolts from my friends Poseidon hover 3 inches behind them!)

Can't wait to try out ISA & LONAW, Love their background and ships!

I really enjoy the League as a whole, and the brakiri individually. The other league races are weak in too many areas/scenarios to play consistently as single races.

I have enjoyed the EA, but not so much the new lists (3rd age feels to bore heavy, crusade has the low pl issue, and early I withhold judgement until I see the new Sag.)

I love the Narn, though I cannot beat the Kaliva stack. But that could be a limitation in the ship models I have available.

I truely do love to play the Centauri, but against them not so much. Smartly squadroned it feels much more like a GW game, he wins initiative, I can try with whats left.

Minbari have been a mixed bag. Love the ships, love the fluff, but Stealth is just a horrid mechanic. Cannot enjoy a game with them or against them on the level I can with everyone else where placement and manuever matter so much more.

ISA, really enjoy the new version...though somewhat leary of the 3+ dodge on the whitestar II. Would rather have seen hull six, mainly because I like to be able to have a tactical choice to take against a persons defense. (ie scout/fighters vs stealth, lots of dice/beam vs interceptors, precise vs large damage/crew numbers, DD vs Adapative, precise vs geg, all round fire vs sm...there is antifighter but its so short ranged eh...)

I love my fleet for its unparalleled ability to absorb damage and keep on dishing it out, its firepower - at medium range, impressive, at short range, catastrophic - and having the best fighter in the game, and in greater numbers than anyone elses'. Also the variety and flexibilty of different hulls availible. The firing arcs on the older cruiser classes look less than ideal, but learning to use them effectivley is half the fun of the game. The other half is what happens once you have!

And, as a bonus, to my mind we've got the coolest looking ships in space.

Oops, wrong universe. That's the Hydrans....

I play EA more out of loyalty than lust for victory, and because if I didn't I'd have to justify owning seventy-odd of their ship miniatures somehow. Still, they have some good looking ships, the missiles and interceptors are useful and the fighters received a boost to their dogfight scores in Arma. And there is something rewarding about fighting a battle on the back foot against stealthy Minbari or beam-monster Centauri and getting a result.

Yes I enjoy all of my fleets. I don't play the Dilgar very often though, just because I like EA and Drakh better. When I get more stuff assembled I'll play ISA too. There's a couple new fleets in playtest that I really like, when minis are out I'll be playing them regularly.

If someone doesn't like their fleet shouldn't they use a different fleet? Play a different game?

That depends how much you dislike your fleet, really. If you're only mildly narked about one or two issues, then stay the course. If you really hate them, sell them on eBay and try some other fleet...

Love the centaurii -especially in campaigns. Just a pity the Vorchan does not cut it any more - great looking ship.

Centaurii are essentially easy to play with good forward arc firepower. I've found League don't cope too well with them.

Can struggle at patrol level.

Always been happy with my EA, still happy with my EA.

I don`t care if the Warlock is armageddon level or that the crusade era is a Minbari style `high level fleet`...

So yes, i`m happy and i do not think that anything needs to change (okay, the sag might be ready for a downgrade, but I never used more then 2 ever anyways in a campaign fleet, so it`s a discussion i don`t care much about)
