I'll buy this books this weekend!

Vincent791

Mongoose
It's my local store's anniversary, so they put all the RPG's books at 50% of their full price.

I'm getting :

Hyboria's Fiercest
Hyboria's Fallen
The Free companies.

I already bought the rest of the books they have, and the ones I'm missing are not available in the store (Stygia, Hyboria's ruins) :(

Anyway, can't wait for this saturday!

It depends on your style of play but I didn't find too much interest in the 3 books you mention. They're a bit too much "rule heavy" for me. Stygia & Ruins are great though. Better save your money for them. But again it's an opinion that reflects my style of play and I can understand that you might have a different view. It's your game after all...

If you can get the money just buy every book of the line (that's what I did even for the lousy Tito's...). The more Mongoose will sell Conan the more we'll get new books. Even though I'm not working for Mongoose I've been in the gaming industry for nearly twenty years. The RPG industry is not going so well, with the severe competition of CCGs, Miniature games and other MMORPGs, along with the constant raise of wild downloading of Pdf.
If nobody buys the books the game would soon be dead. Printing a color hardcover book costs a lot so we can't blame Mongoose if they wan't to make some money with them.

So I think i'ts up to us to support our hobby by buying the books when we can afford it...

I agree completely. I debated for a bit on some of the books but finally gave in, thinking the same way - if we dont buy them, they wont print them. Ive even got 2 of the core rulebooks, one for study one for use during play, and I bought one of the pocket editions for each of my players. Im gonna miss those kids I sold into slavery to get them, but hey! I got all the books!

Hyboria's Fiercest is great for its special rules about travel in the wilderness; in fact these rules are essential and should belong to the core book.

Free companies is important if you intend to run military campaigns in your game.

does the section in 'hyboria's fiercest' on wilderness survival differ from the section in 'across the thunder river'? is the stuff in fiercest better?

Hyboria's Fallen is worth the price for the new Core Class of Temptress. I have had more fun with this class and its associated multiclass combos (as NPCs against the players) than any other. :D

The Free Companies is an excellent book as well, especially if you plan on doing any type of military/war campaign.

What is in across the thunder river is specific to the Pictlands while the section in Hyboria's fiercest covers all kind of ground, but there are also rules for climbing, feats of strength, etc.
Of the 3 classes books, it is the most useful IMO.

The Hyboria's Series are the finest player aides to come out for d20, they are much more useful than D&D's Complete series. They do include some useful class variants, and racial perspectives on the various classes that adds flavor to the game. Fiercest is the most useful as has been pointed out, but all are good.

I think some of the class variants in Hyboria's Finest & Fallen are so ridicilously overpowered that I would never allow my players to use them. They are just completely unbalaned. For example, the thief/barbarian from Fallen exchanges Bite Sword to an ability to stun opponent for several rounds in a grapple without a save! It is extremely strong ability when you consider what he exchanges it for. Likewise, having the Master Archer exchange formation combat to the very strong shooting abilities is just ridicilous.

I think they should have made prestige classes instead of variant classes, since now some of the variant classes receive totally overpowered abilities.

Well, I am of the opinion they aren't that overpowered in relation to when they can take them, and in some cases like your stun issue there are feats that are better like crushing grip (yes it has a save for 1/2) but with a high Str you can drop a guy in one or two rounds by doing straight Con damage. Though if you don't like the power level, tone it down, I mean how hard is it to add a Fort save to the Dirty Fighting ability? Remember as GM you have control...

Prestige classes are worse, and really go munchkin as each new one seems to need to top the previous ones. D&D is overburdened by prestige classes that I believe there over a 100 of them. At least with the Multi-class variant you are given examples of how you as a gm or player can devise ways to make the classes fit your needs, which is ingenious. Prestige class should be rare, difficult to get into and serve a campaign specific purpose. An assassin is an assassin, but a Lord of the Black Ring is something different from a Scholar or scholar variant.

This all comes down to gaming styles, but it's one thing that further seperates Conan from the rest of d20, and for that I appreciate it all the more...

Pick them up Vincent if you have not already. All of them provide valuable play information for players and DM alike. At half off, they are a steal!

Besides, without Fallen there would be no Temptress. And that would be a crime  ....

Hi there guys! Well, yes! damn! I got much more than I originally thought.

I bought "Hyboria's fiercest", "Hyboria's fallen" and "The free companies", I also bought "The lurking terror of Nahab"

I didn't plan to buy the next books, I bought "Sagas of Conan", Conan the Destroyer (Robert Jordan) and 9 books of Age of Conan! (Anok, Kern and a Soldier's Quest).

I'm very happy with Hyboria's fallen cause I have a character that it's gonna get profit with this book :D

I still have to check the other books, to be honest I rather buy books like Shadizar, Aquilonia, etc, and it's a shame cause I can't found Stygia, Argos and Messantia and Ruins of Hyboria in México :(
