If Conan Captained the Exxon Valdez

More of a comment than a question, but it sure seems that Conan really isn't the ship captain that his reputation makes him out to be. As Amra and later, as the leader of the Red Brotherhood, he is a feared pirate on the Vilayet and the Western Sea.

But, look at what has happened to his commands! If he captains as ship, the ship gets sunk!

He might get a little slack when he was running around with Belit, but he had Belit to help him! I got the impression that Belit was really the captain of the ship while Conan was more the leader of the "marines".

In the beginning of Red Nails, Conan mentions to Valaria that the Zingarans just took out his last command from him, and that he's captained many ships in the past--just to have them find their ways to the bottom of the waves.

In de Camp/Howard's The Road of Eagles, the tale begins as Conan nurses his mortally wounded ship enough to get it to the shore to beach it.

My observation is that Conan seems to fight with his vessel as he does face-to-face, in a barbaric, devestating full frontal assault. But Conan himself seems to fair much better when the return blows than his ships seem to do.

Yeah on the official MGP stats I think Conan only has 1 or 2 levels of Pirate.
Just enough to hop from ship to ship and find the poop deck from the stern.
