I never had any problems with plastic bases.
How did you try to get that metal stem in?
You have to make it hot and 'melt' it in, otherwise the plastic may break - and that's just normal, nothing special.

Or you could try cooling the metal stem to shrink it a little, depending on the size differential.

with a round file mind it was a big GW base

SQ, are you trying to do the barrel connectors type stand? If so, I drill mine out with the same size bit that the rod is then hit it with some super glue.

No the metal stem came from my ISA fleet box, thinking of melting 'em down for fishing tackle
