The Europeans are working on a rescue system for hypersonic aircraft. The model would eject from the aircraft, inflate, then glide down towards a rescue site and deploy parachutes to land. The inflation portion gives it extra lift and makes the ride less rough. The capsule has rudimentary control surfaces for basic maneuvering.

The capsule is 17 meters long, weighs 38 metric tons and would form the basis of the 50 passenger aircraft cabin.

seems nasa has even more ambitious ideas for inflatable objects....as reentry heat shields.

I know they have tried various escape pods on military aircraft..with some fairly mixed results.
