Hyborian War Map (better than the Mongoose Map?)

Mongoose
I just learned of the Hyborian War game through a link emirikol posted.

I will have to find the time to learn more about the game and how it is played, but first of all i am really intrigued by the map:

There is a lot of detail given to the inhabitants of specific areas, and it is not the same as the Mongoose version. Shadizar is in the south of Zamora, the haunted pyramids are in Stygia, etc. There are many more revisions I am sure, but I have only glanced at it for a moment.

I winder what Vincent and Dale and the other Hyborian scholars on the board here think of it, would be be a good substitute or suplement to the Mongoose map? Does it better reflect Howard's world?

I noticed though, for example, all the different regions of Iranistan, and wonder if there has been a lot of artistic license taken to rename and divide some kingdoms into smaller areas for game terms, and if many of the place names are not cannon.

I agree with Vincent. Too much is in the wrong place, and there's too much that's been creatively included, although I see the need to do so for game development, in order to spread out the lands, and make each interesting for a potential player.

I'm new to this forum, so my credentials are pretty nonexistent, but I am quite familiar with the Conan canon

The map is fun if you can get past the couple of "RSI-isms" such as the locations of a couple cities that aren't perfect.

The most useful part about the RSI map is the actual kingdom maps. Download a couple of those. They show terrain. That is something that no one else has done.

I find those terrain/provincial maps and information incredibly helpful when it comes to coming up with ideas for regional play.

For example: before stuff started coming out for the RPG, this was all we had to go on for places like Shem and the Black Kingdoms.

I use a lot of it for NPC naming and sometimes the actual unit names for the armies have come in helpful too.

For pictish characters, the names of the provinces make good "clan" names for your characters. Have the player choose one and then use that for ideas on feat/skill selection.

Those are excellent copies. Good high resolution.

Thanks!

You're welcome, Jay.

On a side note, I think that RSI's maps for Hyborian War were done by artist Liz Danforth over twenty years ago. I think that they are still some of the best maps of the Hyboria setting that I have encountered over the years.

There have been some minor changes made to the Hyborian War wall map over the years. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that to move places around on the map would require changes to the game's programming code, also, so it's not as simple a matter as editing the image file for the map. The game also produces blue maps with each turn's processing, which display what a player's kingdom owns. The game also provides the players blue maps that display what all of the player kingdoms in the game own, as peace years turns occur.

I have some versions of those individual kingdom maps that are even higher resolution, but they don't really look any better, and the file size is bigger, which is an issue for me when uploading to my website using a slow dial-up Internet connection.

Oh, and while they are not maps, I also have some higher resolution scans of the individual player kingdom set-up reports for Hyborian War, that I also scanned for RSI, which are located on my site here:

http://grimfinger.net/HWSetupReports.html

They are the same reports as contained on George Habrecht's website, though I used new copies of the reports to scan from, and my copies also contain the initial turn order command sheets in them.
