No, they were flying with magnetically fused torpedoes. The fuses (fortunately) malfunctioned and detonated the warhreads on contact with the sea surface. If they hadn't it is likely that "Shiny Sheff" would have been sunk outright (similar weapons, when they worked properly, caused massive damage to the Italian battleships at Taranto, since they sue a different damage mechanism to the conventional "contact" weapons of the day). The failed attack on Sheff highlighted the deficiencies in the fuse and so the second strike that hit Bismarck was made with conventional contact fuses.
