Help Me Beat Triggy!

I've got a game against the dastardly Triggy tomorrow. He's using either Army of Light (boo, hiss!) or pak'ma'ra. I'm hoping for the dirty carrion eaters, because I want to see how they play before getting a fleet of my own. I'll be using the glorious Centauri Republic, as usual.

So, I'd like any tips, tricks, dirty cheating exploits, advice or handy hints any of my fraternal gaming brothers can provide. It'll probably be 5 raid. His unbeaten record has gone on long enough. Help me beat Triggy!

I hear bludgeoning him at the knees is a good strategy for one knowing they have no chance in hell of victory under fair conditions =)

To be honest - the two fleets are massively different. also are you using any other P+P rules?

against the Army of Light - standard Centauri fleet I would take is:

Liati (against White Stars gotta be done)
Balvarin - for the fighter support / command - both very useful
Demos, Demos (squadroned for horrible firepower)
Maximus,
Kutai, Haven x2 (for in sinks and to take light ships - mopping up)

against Pak - much different due to the shortish range but very nasty emine effects:

I would prob go:

Primus
Elutarian
Sullust
maybe Demos, Demos

lots of CBD and maybe squadron the first three together as should fire first and to make it count - let the Demos kill his Drazi ships - but watch out for the emines - potentailly very nasty

If you use a Liati be prepared for it to get shot at a lot! It can't sit at the front of your fleet, taking fire... it will blow up very easily. You have to use it like a White Star, find cover and wait for an opportunity to spring your trap. If you can get off a good shot or two, it will definitely be worth it.

I'll probably be using pak'ma'ra if David's happy with 5FAP Raid (I hardly have any more pak ships) - the fleet would be 2 x Urik-Hal, 1 x Halik, 2x Ikorta, 4 x Sunhawk. If David doesn't mind proxy ships I'll take a Pshul'Shi (proxied) and an extra Ikorta and two Sunhawks to make a 5FAP Battle fleet.

Maybe this will help with your fleet selections...

so kind of him, so you don't really need a liati, though those sunhawks can still dodge.

if you are up for 5 battle, mm, not a centauri player, but suluust have to be in, a primus or two as they are nicely tough, definately maximus for guardian array gubbins, Balvarin to gain your obvious fighter superiority and extra interceptors. can you get any rutarians? if you can get past his mines and remove the halik (that said is the pak halik an interceptor? ), they will maul his ikortas Demos are always worth taking, but be caredul with squadroning them because of his mines.
I'd personally concentrate on taking out the PshulSHi and the Sunhawks as soon as you can, the Ikortas are a lot less deadly in my opinion. sustaines sulust and Primus fire should remove the pshulshi, and allow those ships to move on to the Sunhawks. Maybe try holding back the Demos to protect from sunhawk flanking, and massed plasma mine fire too!

also consider trying the TBS and lets see how it works :-)

5pt Battle

Hmm

Primus x2 (squadroned intially on CDB)
Balvarin, (for command and general usefulness / fighters) Demos, Demos
Sullust x2
Elutarian, Maximus, 2 Kutais (to deal with small ships / In sinks)

Squadron the Elutarin and Sullusts as well for intial firepower assaults

Demos and Kutai hang back and kill any smaller ships that come at you

Maximus (on CBD) lends to the 2 Primus (vs nasty missiles) as the Sullust and Demos have their own interceptors and the Elutarain can hang back a bit on CBD with hull 6. Use a few Sentris as interceptors with the Balvarin nearby but pull them back when you close to 15" or less.

Flanking is not that good against the pak as they have good side arcs

CBD is your friend initially I feel.................

Way I see it, battle lasers aren't going to help that much with the pak, their redundant systems makes crits much less effective. I figure fighters are doomed to his plasma webs.

Also, I don't have two Sulusts. :?

thats hardly the attitude thats going to get ou a win now is it.

they are not immune to crits, they are immune to some damage, doesn't matter if his forward weapons are knocked offline if he taks 1 or 10 damage now does it :-). fighters that can get behind him are NOT doomed to plasma webs, come on man, think positive thoughts. Triggy is Not unbeatable!

Getting behind his fleet would be a nice trick with enough fighters to matter. Not sure how I'd do that.

I do fancy boarding him, actually. I reckon a Secundus would be a good choice, drive it in close and batter him with heavy ion cannons before boarding. I'd be reliant on running adrift crits though, Trig isn't stupid enough to all stop near an assault cruiser...

Beams are effective - remember a number of his ships have interceptors and good hull. But then my suggested ships do to - so he has to break through that (and CBD to take your ships down)

Secondus - well its got to get in close and his close in guns are not to be ignored!

what ships do you have - and for the Love of the Republic don't take an Octurion !!! Much better are 2 Primus or even a Primus / Secondus (although not my choice.........)

only one Sullust - swap one and the Elutarian out for a third Primus or a Secondus - now with all three, thats a Squadron from the show!!! :P

don't think of your fighters as attack craft initially - use them as interceptors and perhaps later as attack craft...........

I have:

1 Adira substitute
1 Octurion
1 Liati substitute
2 Primus
2 Dargan
2 Balvarin
2 Centurion
2 Altarian
1 Sulust
2 Corvan
2 Maximus
10 Vorchan
2 Morgrath
2 Darkner
2 Kutai
4 Haven
1 bunch of fighters

Some of this is unassambled or otherwise unready to use, I.e damaged and in need of repair.

Hmm have most of what I suggested - I am sure Triggy would let you sub ships - he is subbing already :)

personally I would go with my original suggestion - although 3 Primus is damn tempting :)
