Grey Star

Random Code

Mongoose
Sorry if this has been asked before, but are there any plans to release the Grey Star gamebooks as well? In some ways I actually preferred those to the Lone Wolf ones - they were really complimentary to one another.

I do not believe so, as they are by Ian Page

They are still available for viewing and download in their original forms at projectaon.org

I think that might be the problem, no large groups of people have been vocal about buying a re-release of Grey Star. I know two people from the old TotS site joined and knew the world from Grey Star nor Lone Wolf though, so Random Code is not unique.

Grey Star was a 4 book series. An excellent one at that, well balanced in terms of gameplay. LW has a bigger fan base (although the majority of LW fans would probably have read GS)and crucially was unfinished. That is the main reason why the original fans will support the re-release of LW.

There is also the possibility that books 29-32 will take place in or around Grey Star's part of the world.

The game play/story line is what will bring new readers into the fold.

I loved Grey Star too. SPOILER
I think you could be right about something happening with Grey Star in latter LW books - I'm sure in one of the early New Order books there is a part about Grey Star missing but can't find it at the mo. Perhaps he needs rescuing now - after all Banedon was bk14 LW bk 25 so it's the usual heroic stuff, or maybe the Kai need him. Hey maybe we get a chance to go to the Plane of Light this time or Daziarn and catch up with Lorkan; wonder if Serocca is still stuck in that building - perhaps not now Chaos Master is dead. I assume the Oriah/Sesketara and other loose ends are tied up too, maybe even Vurnos reappearing from Bk 1 if he isn't dead - I can't wait. By the way if my calculations are correct does this mean you can play book 32 as a Supreme Master? 4 GM Disciplines plus 11 completed adventures (21-31) = 15 Disciplines.

Ooops gone off the point a bit. Yes Grey Star loved the books, would love a re-lease even if only to give me 4 more chances of writing a mini-adventure: There are plenty of characters to choose from Acarya, Jnana, Shan Li, Tanith, Sado, Samu and of course Urik the Wise. Wonder if we'll ever see any anti-hero mini adventures? Shasarak, Mother Magri, Agarash!

Did I see something about a Banedon series? In which case they are unlikely to do Grey Star for fear of repetition - to an average person they are "just wizards".

In this thread on Project Aon, we discussed all the possible things that could take place in the upcoming books, including what happen to GS, Sesketera and the rank of the GM at the beginning of book 32.

Thanks for that Black Cat, it's given me plenty to think about.
True Bull - you're right the main reason for me signing up for the mega-deal is just to finally get hold of bks 29-32, need to wipe my chin I'm drooling in anticipation.
As for what's higher than 15 Discipline Supreme Master? I guess you could be a demi-god like Shianti or Alyss when you get all the Grand Master Disciplines: I always think of the last six as non-Kai anyway though, you know Magi Magic, Kai Alchemy, Astrology, Bardmanship, Herbmastery and Elementalism so I don't think learning them
should have much effect on rank but this of course would be unwieldy with the game mechanics.
Maybe they'll put in a new rank Arch Grand Master after Sun Prince (sounds 'lower' though) something like that or maybe Kai thinks "Only 15 Disciplines? Oh go on then I suppose you've done enough - you're now a Supreme Master." :)

Trying...to...write...must...stop........laughing.

That was great and here was me thinking up sensible titles like Kai Prophet, Kai Saint, Kai Disciple or, my favourite, Sun Psion.
Would be nice if we get to do Bk 32 as Supreme Master but I suppose that's unlikely because surely at some point you will be referred to as Grand Master (conversations, etc.).
Looks like we won't have long to wait if bk 29 out soon!

But you'll play as a Supreme Master in book 32: you'll have 15 Disciplines at the beginning of that book, which is the number required to become a SM in the NO. That's the cunning plan of JD: make you play as a SM in the last book to fight the biggest thread of all: Agarash the Damned!

Oh wait, forget this last bit about Agarash, that's just a speculation...

I'm quite tempted to agree with you about Agarash, especially if Grey Star has gone missing. Hmm... so if Ishir now has the Moonstone, after the Shianti delivered it to her personally, and presumably that will again be the only thing which can defeat him - just like in Grey Star, it's maybe a re-visit to Naaros and and trip to the Plane of Light? Just speculation of course.

From a recent JD interview:

"Earlier this year I had some email communication with Ian Page following my Italian publisher’s decision to re-launch the Grey Star series in Italy this Christmas (2008). It was great to hear from him again after twenty years! He is still in the music business and touring with his band regularly. I look forward to the chance of a reunion with him sometime next year. We both live and work in different parts of the world, and we have busy work schedules, so although the desire is there, it’s quite tricky to fix up a date when we’re both available at the same time and in the same place."

Note the above was about socially getting together. Later in the interview JD mentions there was no plans for the series to continue, nor revisit the area and characters outside the last four LW gamebooks.

From the interview:

What I can tell you is that Book 29 is called ‘The Storms of Chai’. The series picks up in the year MS5102, that’s 18 years after the events depicted in Lone Wolf 28 – The Hunger of Sejanoz. The final four books will be closely linked from a timeline point of view, and they will build to a dramatic conclusion in Book 32. I plan to produce 500 sections for the final book. There has been much speculation on the Lone Wolf fan sites about how the series will end and which protagonists will feature in the final adventures. A couple of the fans have guessed correctly at about 25% of the conclusion, but nobody has come anywhere close to 100% of what I have in store for them.

...

I can say that the final four books of the Lone Wolf series will feature some of the major characters and places that were established in the Grey Star series.

So I think we were right on Agarash and GS making a return, so let's add to the mix Tanith and Shasarak.

Given the time distance, 50 years, I'd say we will likely see GS's and Tanith's children or grand-children feature more than they themselves.

Other items which may appear is Taklakot and the Mad King, the Kazim, and some of the Masbate, but not necessarily the ones we saw in GS due to the time difference.
