G'Quan Trouble

Jellicoe

Mongoose
Maybe somebody can help me with this one. I am trying to assemble some G’Quans, but they are giving me no end of trouble. The hulls are fantastic and have hardly any imperfections, but the wings are just a pain and a nightmare. I have had my share of troubles building ACTA models but this is just proving to be beyond me.

Basically the wings seem to come in different sizes (I know impossible) and in some cases are just to big. Getting them in line with the slots on the hull means results in the structure being utterly deformed. If I make a nice wing shape, it does not fit on the hull and makes it stand off quite considerably to the point of looking stupid.

I got the Narn box set nearly two years ago, have the sculpts improved? Are there any tricks how to make this work?

I am working on some G'Quans at the moment and I can assure you the casting quality of the more recent hulls and wings are the worst I have seen in 25 years as a hobbyist I am sorry to say. But still, nothing that can't be fixed :)

To your problem however. Yes, the wings are strangely wider than the outer wing spars they should attach to, its not unique to you, I have had the same problem. The trick to attaching them is to lay each of the wings flat with their outer surface facing on the worktop and then very carefully, whilst holding the central spar, bend each of the wings ever so slightly upwards so that each side has a very slight downwards bend when on the hull.
You should then find that the gap between the hull and the wing is uniform when looking at it head on. This is not the case when the wing is straight and flat.

If you bend the wings slightly to follow the contour of the hull you should find they fit much easier. It takes a little trial and error, but hopefully that should solve your problem.

Carl

Thanks for that. I will have to try that out next week.

Been re-watching the B5 seasons on DVD and since I'm still screwing around with my G'Quans, whenever one popped up I looked carefully.

The upper/lower wings being longer than the mid-section ones is intentional. Its not a miscast, they're supposed to have a slight curve to them. Jellicoe is correct on the advice on how to bend them, although I just use a pair of needlenose and eyeball the curve.

If your going to use his method, I would suggest an addtional step. Whenever you have the wings completely flat, outside surface facing down on the table, very slightly bend the 2 stubs with the tabs outward from the middle. When you bend them to the correct curve, the slots get out of postion where they should be.

Also, when bending them, a slight twist needs to be done as well. You actually have to do about 3 bends on each side, with a lot of adjusting. Also, whenever you do your dry fits, make absolutely sure that the mid wings do not get bent. If the mids get knocked out of alignment, you'll have to redo both top/bottom wings
