Gloranthan Characters Question

In Heroquest 2 all characters start witt an affinty for 3 runes. Is there a similiar mechanic in MRQ2 for Gloranthan characters?

Sort of. Ish.

Rune affinity will get more detail in the Cults book. It will work akin to HQ2 Affinity, but styled towards the way cults work in RQII. Plus, there are mythical forces, too, that cult membership enforce.

Y'know, that answer left me feeling the need to know more details, not less.

Does Sorcery also follow the HQ2 model where a Grimoire is tied to a Rune? Does a Sorcerer have a Sort of. Ish. affinity to runes that will make them better suited to some schools/grimoires than others?

Thanks! :D

Not as explicitly as that. Sorcery does tie back to the runes (and how is explained in the RQII rules) but mechanically, it is based on the grimoire(s) one knows. As the bulk of Gloranthan sorcerers learn via a sorcery school, which in turn may have some runic affinity, the connection is maintained.

Its very difficult to gain a runic affinity without either a) HeroQuesting for it, or b) developing an explicit relationship with a god via a theist cult. As most Gloranthan sorcerers are not theists, developing a runic affinity is going to be along a different path - ie, HeroQuesting. But its still possible. However, one's runic affinity will not predispose one grimoire or order over another: the whole point of sorcery is that its magic that isn't reliant on the rune relationship to begin with. It circumvents and breaks that relationship to a large extent.

Thanks for the responses.

This seems to be a bit different from the HQ2 approach where everyone, regardless of which type of magic they practice, has an affinity with three runes.

So is a Runic Affinity the same as, similiar to, or completely different than a Runecasting skill?

Can sorcerers learn Rune Magic? Or is the whole Runecasting/Rune Magic thing changed to the point that direct comparisons don't apply.

Wait for the Cults book which will fully define the way rune affinities work.

Completely different.

Rune Magic is gone, so the comparisons no longer apply.

:?

If I recall right the order of releases is:

1. Core Rules (Jan)
2. Pavis Rises (Feb)
3. Glorantha (Mar)
4. Cults (Some point later - April at the soonest it seems).

I know you can't release everything at once (and I couldn't afford to buy everything at once) but there seems to me a problem here. Are there character generation rules in Pavis Rises? If the Rune Affinities are not detailed until the Cults Books is released will it be possible to create fully realized Gloranthan Characters when Pavis is released?

The RQII chargen rules support Glorantha characters. Glorantha: The Second Age expands that considerably and it includes a Pavis/Sun County template (but you will be able to play Pavis Rises without it, just using the core book).

As for cults/rune affinities and so on, the Cults book is definitely the place for it. You needn't worry, Rurik. rune affinities are not something divine cult initiates begin with; they're developed over time. the release structure of the Glorantha books will not harm your enjoyment or the utility of the magic systems.
