GEG. How does it work?

I'm a bit thick-headed about the rules for GEG, but how does it exactly work? Say, a ship attacks with 5 AD, hits with 3 (all solid hits) and inflicts 3 damage and crew, does the GEG then deducts 1 so it would be a total of 2 damage and crew?

Thanks!

yup, simple stuff, but any 6 hit is not absorbed, so if you have GEG 3, and get hit 3 times, one of which is a crit, you still take a 1-1 for that (or any multiple)
GEG, the most overated system in the world :-) although it's great against fighters

Yes. The GEG rating is subtracted from the total amount of damage done by a single weapon sysytem.

However if any of those hits come up critical, than the GEG will be bypassed and all the damage from that particular dice will penetrate the GEG.

With your example, a ship attacks with 5 AD, hits with 3 (2 score solid hits, 1 scores a 2-5 (fuel systems ruptured) critical) against a ship with GEG 3.

The 2 solid hits will be reduce by the GEG 3 to 0 damage & 0 crew. The critical hit will penetrate the GEG doing 1 Damage & 1 Crew (as solid hit) + 2 Damage & 1 Crew (critical hit table).

The GEG 3 ship therefore takes 3 Damage & 2 Crew and a -4 Speed penalty from the attack.

Hmm...I thought the Sold hit from the crit was still blocked, and the only damage that got through was the bonus damage and crew from the critical table?

apparantly it was rulesmastered that the damage from the initial hit also goes through :-(

Personally I think GEG is hugely overated.

hiff is right, crits are not stopped by GEGs at all. That includes the initial 1/1 from the critical hit.

On the subject of Rules Mastering is there a definitive FAQ? If so could someone bung it into player resources.

The GEG is balanced by the low hulls on the Drakh ships. The GEG on the Adira (hull 6) really makes it a monster.

oh, I understand the reasoning for sure, It's just not as useful as people think, I'd take a higher hull over geg 2, 3, or even 4, when someone opens up a beam hitting on 2's!
The Geg is a decent secondary weapon blocker, Primary weapons normally overload it quite easily.

Yes. It is only efficient against smaller weapons but doesn't get depleted like interceptors and is less random than dodge or stealth.

I thought hiff's GEG would be pretty effective against my Strikehawk fleet at Hash's tournament, since I relied on lots of single-damage weapons, which is where a GEG is supposed to excel. But the only VP's hiff gained were from my Sky Serpents dying when his Drakh Scout exploded!

and 2 crippled strikehawks!! I did do SOME damage on my own ;-)

you were mostly hitting GEG1 ships, the cruiser did take what?, 4? strikehawks to take it out?

Oh yes you're right, you did get 1/4 of your VP's yourself ;)

Does this only apply to natural 6s, or to 5s rolled by precise weapons too (since they 'become' 6s?)?
It applies to "Critical hits", however they are obtained. That is rolling 6, rolling 5 on a Precise weapon, or Ramming

Hmm, off-topic warning :)

That makes me think, when you ram, you D6 automatic critical hits. Does that mean D6 criticals, each of which does 1 damage, 1 crew plus a roll on the critical effects table? Previously we've played it as only D6 rolls on the critical effects table. But a "critical hit" is defined as being 1 damage, 1 crew, plus a critical effect... so D6 automatic criticals would be D6x this.
