Game brainstorming - auction catalog

I've got a scenario coming up in a few months and I'd like to get some additional opinions.

The basic premise is that of an estate sale. The old man who died, in true Call of Cthulhu fashion, was eccentric and very very wealthy. He was an eccentric collector fascinated by aliens and alien tech.

IPX is going to be giving the PCs a budget and asking them to go represent them on the ground at the auction. Their employers will have picked out some pieces in the catalog that they want the PCs to buy, and will give them some leeway to evaluate the rest in person. The drama will come from the wheeling and dealing behind the scenes as they try to make deals with the other bidders, make their budget stretch, and try to find out which pieces are actually worth something and which aren't. And, for that matter, trying to figure out why the scruffy guy is bidding on that particular worthless statue...

I have about a page of ideas ranging from useless alien widgets to his personal flyer, from misclassified vorlon tech to the contents of his wine cellar. Would anyone like to help brainstorm some ideas and help me come up with some really interesting auction pieces?

There was a DS9 episode in which a strange alien object up for auction actually turned out to be an energy-based lifeform in hibernation, kind of like a space-going butterfly.

I remember that one. So many space bugs in Star Trek...a good idea but I'm not sure I'm ready to give them an egg or cocoon to take care of. Though along those lines, a soul hunter globe might make for an interesting auction piece...I could even list it in with the artwork, since as far as they know it's just a glowy sphere.

I was just thinking that this thread was a bit quiet, so here are a few objects: -

A Luminati sex aid!

[Plot Hook – none really, except that it is actually a very rare and valuable one and the original owner has used a 3rd party on B5 to arrange a listing on the Hunter’s Network for its safe return.]

Collectors Cabinet
A crystal cabinet containing a collection of Centauri ducats going back centauries, each one a perfect of example of the highest denomination that was issued in a particular emperor’s reign.

[Plot Hook – one of the coins is a fake, it is hollow and contains a backup copy of the Purple files of a slightly absent minded noble of one of the major houses. The files are over 200 years out of date, but do reveal that one of current great houses has an heir is descended from a slave and not the ruler at the time! This could still be very embarrassing even now and more than enough to kill to keep silent.]

The Old Statue
A solid metal figure standing about 18” high and made of an unknown golden material. Whatever it was originally was has been erased over time so that now it is only the blurred outlines of a figure rising from flames/smoke.
It was discovered by a Brakiri freighter that had to drop out of hyperspace on the edge of a system when they lost a beacon lock. While they drifted in realspace calculating their position the statue collided with the ship. The captain took it but there was something about it that made him very, very uneasy. Since then it had been through many hands, none keeping it more than a year or two at the most.

[Plot Hook – this is a left over artefact from the dark days when the Thirdspace aliens rampaged through the Galaxy! It is not smoke or fire but tentacles that grasp the figure...
It is one of six and is a terrible device to weaken the fabric of the universe to let the influence of its makers through.
The six must be placed in a perfect circle around the area to be influenced; once in place they begin to feed on the psychic energy of any sentient species within gradually growing in power and spreading their influence further and further; eventually they may even have enough power to open a door to Thirdspace itself. This statue was one of the set that was placed around a whole solar system.
The statue is looking for someone with the right racial genetic memory for it to begin its mission all over again. If it finds someone then they will be not only compelled to own it but to find the other five (that will be calling out now) and maybe, just maybe open that door again    ]

This is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for, thanks. Those are some good ideas. The collection of coins is going straight into the catalog as written. I'm not sure I'm ready to throw anything even remotely related to Thirdspace at my 3rd level PCs, but it's something that's likely to come up later...Keep the ideas coming, the more interesting things I have on the block, the more my PCs will squirm.

In addition, I have a PC who has a small Vorlon artifact (though he has no idea what it does yet). I want a larger piece of Vorlon tech in the auction (misclassified as a statue, not technology at all) that this thing will react to, but for the life of me I can't think of something interesting that this new one could do. The only thing that's come to mind is that when they load it on their ship it will start melding with the ship's computer systems, but that's pretty unoriginal. Any ideas?

Glad to help out! :D

You could always make the artefact the Holy Grail (or an alien equivalent), it does say that it influences its owners to become more lawful and a user is inspired or driven to create an empire, to become part of a government, to form order and make connections. Maybe your PC has a key that activates it, once the two are in close proximity.
Can you imagine what that would do to a typical party of PCs

And of course the original owner might want it back, or a Vorlon agent is not happy that it is not in the right hands, or maybe the Shadows have some plans for it too. Fun, fun, fun

DW

Heh the PC in question is a Brikiri Trader, a dealer in alien artifacts. His motivating goal is profit above everything else. Gods forbid that I ever give him a drive to start a crusade or form an empire...

You did put that into perspective though. He's got the key to the device, I hadn't really been thinking in those terms, though that's exactly what I said. So this thing's been dormant for centuries, treated as a piece of art all this time. Perhaps the Grail thing isn't so far off. Perhaps it's something along the lines of a device that helps one reach one's potential. Something like an anti-Apocalypse Box, in that it's out to help its owner. Less overt help than the Box, but more benevolent help as well. Which still leaves it as a really vague chunk of tech...hmm. Still needs work. Any other thoughts?

Actually I have three lots blocked out in the catalog for "unknown" items, and I'm assuming they are all some form of Shadow tech. Or technomage tech, that'd work as well. However I don't have Darkness and Light on hand, so the only Shadow tech I can come up with are weapons and that Shadow shroud thing from the Fall of Centauri Prime novels. I'm hoping IPX and The Rim get here before this scenario comes up, but til then I'd love some recommendations of cool Shadow or Mage tech that would fit here.

Firstly, don't make every bit of unknown tech come from the Vorlons or the Shadows, or even from a known race. The B5 galaxy is a big and an old one, and full of mysteries.

Some ideas:
* An alien musical instrument that telepathically broadcasts the artist's emotions to the audience
* A set of vials of gases, each of which is a sample from the atmosphere of a different distant world. One of the vials contains trace elements of something valuable, like Quantium-40. Trace the vial, find the planet, get rich.
* A mummified corpse. Optionally, a mummified corpse that comes back to life and tries to eat the brains of the characters.
* A mysterious scroll, written in an untranslated alien language. It's actually the menu for a takeaway restaurant chain that flourished tens of thousands of years ago, before the Shadow War.
* A damaged and degraded data crystal, containing information about a Drakh attack on a now-dead world.
* An alien weapon that functions by feeding tactical data and moves into the mind of its user, turning him into a killing machine.

These are also good ideas, thanks Gar. And a good point about the other sources of alien tech. I'll need to be sure to make the sources of some of the unknowns from various other sources. Keep the brainstorming coming on the functions of the items, this is all good stuff.

And by the way, I like the Drakh idea so much that it's already in place. The scenario they are playing through right at the moment has some Drakh undercurrents that won't become clear for months. (Or at least it will become clear eventually assuming they keep a certain NPC alive.) The Drakh are the ultimate antagonists in my campaign so this auction has a few hints and some heavy foreshadowing. (a deed to a warehouse on a planet no one can find called "Thenothk", for example, which will come up again later, once the contents of the warehouse become relevant to their mission)

Heh I suppose at least one alien pop culture reference would be in keeping with Babylon 5. There was that scene about the alien abduction trial, after all. Not to mention the X Files episode of Crusade. Perhaps I'll have a guy chain smoking in the back row, not bidding on anything, just making notes on who gets what pieces.

I like this idea. Especially, if it is hotly contested by various factions. The irony would be hilarious.

I came up with some ideas as well.

An alien TV remote. Not powered, but looks like a weapon.

An electronic book that copies any other book it touches for more than an hour. It has millions of books, but does not translate the books into the long dead alien race's language. DC 20 to decipher the alien language of the book. Most of the books are in that language, but others are in various languages, known and not known. Everything from children's books to manuals, to news, to fiction, to history to almost anything. Really useful stuff should be hard to decipher. Figuring out how the book copies things, should be at least a DC 40+ and take serious government labs decades to figure out.

A water bottle that cleans any water placed in it after 10 minutes, uses d3 rare items to refill the cleaner equipment. 100+d6 uses

A set of organic goggles with dials and knobs on the sides. An elementary school curriculum for a long dead alien race. Once placed on the head and activated, it telepathically downloads the info into the vict/ um subjects head. This takes 30 minutes. If the goggles are taken off before it finishes, the subject must make a will save (dc 20) or be knocked unconscious for d10 hours. If the save is made the subject is still stunned for 6+d10 minutes. Once the goggles have finished downloading, the subject will only speak in the alien language for d6 days before it fades. Otherwise, it imparts no other special knowledge. If the subject has someone else to speak to and spends the appropriate skill points, he can learn the language to add to the ones he already knows.

Alien tunic and pants that resist water, smells and stains with a strangely compelling pattern on the front. The alien race had four arms and three legs. The alien letters on the front translate to "Aloha"

A deck of cards with microcircuitry inside. With a control ring, the card in hand can be changed to any other card value. Tapping the card cycles through the card values. The ring is not included. With current tech, it would take a large computer and transmitter to work. The transmitter would only work over 20 feet. DC 30 to set up the computer and transmitter. DC 25 computer use check to change the correct card to the correct value.

A small, black, shiny alien cube. DNA encoded to an individual of a long dead alien race. In a lab it is a DC 28 to decipher the DNA code and DC 20 to manufacture the correct sequence. Once activated the cube is a travel clock set to the 33.01455 hour day of the long dead alien race. d6 alarms are set to go off each day for 10 minutes (set alarm time randomly). Once activated, the alarms can only be deactivated telepathically.

A small bottle of gel that glows faintly. It is a hair care product for a long dead race. Can be used by someone with human type hair to hold it in place and will have the hair slightly glow as well. The hair will look luxurious for d12 hours, but will severely dry out the hair resulting in temporary hair loss if not treated. DC 5 medical check. Can be used by Minbari as strong bone cleaner.

A laser pen. Writes on paper by charring the paper. It is permanent and can not be erased without repairing the charring on the paper. The laser only works when in contact with paper.

A large ornate wooden dresser made of a fragrant wood. (Like an alien version of cedar.) Equipment in the floor of each drawer freshens the clothes in the drawer once a day, effectively cleaning the clothes of stains and odors. Not currently powered.

P.S. Five more from me.

A matched pair of ceramic bracelets with low quality gemstones set in them. When the gemstones are pressed in a certain order, the bracelets vibrate ever so slightly, in varying patterns. (They are an alien version of an IPod, playing music for a race that has 'ears' at the end of appendages. DC 18 to figure out it the patterns are music and DC 25 to translate the pop tunes.

A two meter ring of light metal that can fold into a small package. There is an array of crystals set evenly around the ring. Twisting the four larger crystals at the cardinal points activates the ring. An opaque curtain shines for 3 meters above the ring forming a dark curtain above the ring. The curtain only blocks visible light and is easily stepped through. (Once inside, changing to bathing attire while on an open beach is easily and modestly done.)

A flat, metallic disk. When a dial is turned, on the bottom of the disk, the disk expands into a 16 ounce cup. Squashing the cup back into a disk, resets the disk.

Two adjustable loops of leather with circuitry on them and a few dials. Place the loops together and twist the dials and they are connected by a colored force field line. The dials can change the color of the force field line, which changes it's frequency. Multiple sets of loops are found together. Force field lines of different colors can pass through each other. Lines of the same color can not. Alien pet walkers used these for walking multiple pets.

Small crystal cube the size of a six-sided die. Touching all six sides at once with bare flesh activates the cube. A small 6 inch hologram of an alien appears for one minute speaking in his language. Translation reveals it is a business card for a the alien.

Plus one from my daughter.

A matched pair of wide, heavy metal belts, made out of linked metal plates, that would fit a large creature. One flat disk with a gem stud that will fit one the buckle of either belt. In this game, one person would put the disk on their belt and would be the hider. The other person is the finder. If the finder doesn't find the hider (who has the disk) within a set time period, the finders belt sends out an explosion of energy to the wearer. For the crystalline aliens who wore these, the explosions would only sting. For normal, fleshy races, it causes 1d6 damage.

That's quite a list, thank you! Many of those more "novelty" items will fit perfectly in the sections for unknown (but not too useful/profitable). Perfect for detail and color. Now those entries might be interesting as opposed to blank and obviously not the plot devices.

I've still got an opening or two for Shadow or Vorlon (or First One) tech that is "unknown" but obviously valuable. High stakes bidding, the sorts of things that could be long-term plot devices, or minor artifacts that could give them an edge later. (I'm thinking the Walking Stone from Ragged Edge as an example.) These are the last elements for the catalog, and I really appreciate everyone's input. Between my own sleepless nights and the input from everyone here, it's down from several dozen blanks to just these two key artifacts. Thanks all!

You said earlier that you were interested a Shadow Tech item or a Technomage item. Do you have the Technomage book? It has a list of 'magical' items in the back. Here's a list.

Some of the lesser items that only a mage can use. Acid Rod, Belt of Flexible Shielding, Cloak of Invisibility, Flaming Fingernail, Glove of Grasping, Healing Crystal, Ring of Armor, Spy Dust, Lesser Weapon of Prowess, Weapon of Prowess, Greater Weapon of Prowess

Items made for individuals. Brooch of Monitoring, Friend's Ring of Lesser Armor, Wood Sking Tunic

An item anyone can use. Bracelet of Stabilization

Instruments of power that only a mage can use. Amulet of Curing, Flying Carpet, Helm of the Senses, Hammerfist Gauntlets, Ring of Complete Protection.

Except for the healing items, these items or anything else a mage would make, could be attuned only to the mage, an individual, a group (like a family), a race, or anyone. With rules in the book for making new spells not listed and rules for using spells to make items, you can make just about any magical item you want.

There is also a large list of elixirs for one shot uses for various spells.

Some of the things that I have thought over are similar to items above.

A ring, using the Greater Armor and Greater Personal Shield spells, each provides a +3 DV for a total of +6. If the ring has the maximum power regeneration, then the +6 DV would be permanent while the ring is worn. It would be expensive to make and would be very rare for a mage to give to someone else. But if you don't mind glowing slightly blue, then you be well protected.

Or a PPG or other ranged weapon. Use Greater Prowess to provide a +3 to hit and Total Flexible Shield for 30 points of damage protection. After activation you have 1-2 minutes of each. It is another really expensive item to make.

A watch that can put the wearer outside of time to do four rounds of actions (the Stop Time spell) would be very useful to certain sections of government.

The Shadows would be able to do even more of course.

Kizarvexis

Thanks for that. I don't have the Technomage book, nor do I have Darkness and Light, which has all the Vorlon/Shadow stuff. Which is part of the reason I posted here for ideas. Unfortunately, most of my books aren't geared toward the magic end of the B5 continuum. I did pull a fun trinket out of the Drakh book though, and IPX (which I FINALLY received last week) has at least one item that might end up on the block as well.

My favorite of those you listed is "Spy Dust". It sounds like just the sort of thing to be all over some of the more dangerous items. Why bid on them and reveal your interest when you can just keep an eye on them (if you'll pardon the expression) from the shadows...

How about a face hugger in a jar and when one of the pc's get too close to it it moves and attemps to attach its self to the pc but is stopped by the jar
