Galactic Guide Map

Okay, I just got my hands on the Galactic Guide (as well as the 2nd ed. core book, Drakh and ship builders, but that is another conversation, ). In the map at the begining of the book the territory that was formally Markab is shown to be in Earth Alliance colors.

My question is this: When did Earth take over the territory of the Markabs? Was this inentionally done or is this a typo.

Still, its a great book, with a lot of interesting and useful world facts. Heck, even if I never run a Babylon 5 game I could use the worlds made here as pre-generated worlds for a sci-fi game.

Another question, though this has more to do with fluff and not the game: Since it looks like hte Earth Alliance is hemmed in by aliens on all sides in what direction are they expanding.

And while I think about it, wasn't the Sh'lasan Empire completely and totally conquered by the Earth Alliance.

I think it would be a typo. There were left over Markab who would have received Dr Franklin's cure, so I think it would nominally be Markab territory, but in reality would be no mans land for all the surrounding governments to raid for leftovers. Sheridan says as much, about the raiding for leftovers, when he does the bonehead maneuver in the S3 ep "Matters of Honor".

The was a civil war and the Sh'lasan Empire asked the EA to help fight the rebels. For this aid, the EA gets to put a base in the Sh'lasan Empire. The EA only conquers the rebels at Matok on Akdor.

Indeed, and as these are Hyperspace Jump Route maps, and Hyperspace has a non linear relationship to Realspace then all bets are off

I don't think this has been absorbed into the Mongoose canon (but I also don't think it has been contradicted either) but AOG had the Sol system placed in a "difficult" region of Hyperspace that was not easy to explore and the Centauri only ventured into it when their empire was declining (systems gaining independence through whatever means...) and they need to find new systems that had not been exploited by anyone else. And then they ran into the EA and it was easier to form a trading relationship with them. For the EA, this neglected region of space was right on their doorstep and despite the difficulties of exploring Hyperspace there, they had good, "real-space" information to work from which the non-local powers did not.

Of course, Sol may have formally had a gate which the Vorlons may have removed 1000 years previously once they found out about Valen/Sinclair in order to preserve the Earth's isolation until the "modern" era.

Speaking of the Galactic Guide...I've generally steered clear of 1st edition books so far, but I'm starting a game next month and I find myself wondering what places like Vega or Quadrant 15 are like...

Is the Galactic Guide worth buying? Is it consistent enough with 2e material?

The GG doesn't have any 'gaming' material, IIRC. So it is compatible with 1e or 2e.
