My mate & me have started trialing a crewless version fo ACTA.
Uses the same stats for hits & first number in crew score +1 for Crew.
The crew score is used for making CQ checks & avoiding crit effects.
The crit chart we changed, took a lot of the damage out of it. Some hits still damage crew. Some crits require a certain amount of crew to ignore the crit effect eg avoid the 6-6 needs 4 crew to avoid or explode. When crew reduced to zero you are skeleton crewed. Any crew damage after reduced to zero become dam.
The first games were quite fun & it looks like we are on to something. It gets quite tactical whether you sacrifice crew to a make special order or hold them back for crit protection.
The Crit protection still means you take the dam but not the effect. Some crits have crew damage which can't be avoided. This makes flight computers more use for those that have them and big ships harder to kill kinda like the redundancy idea.
Only had a couple 5 pt raid games but looked the part.
The funny thing about the games was patrol ships, scouts seemed to survive longer even with puny 2 crew. Early EA vs Centauri won the first game & Centauri won the second. They both real close though.
