if i remember correctly fighters can never do anything to ships so in a game where one fleet has bought fighter support and the other side didnt doesnt this seem like the side who bought support is being screwed?

Yes they changed it. . . No they are not the point. . . fighters and carriers brought an end to the age of true naval combat and the dominance of the battleship! Ruining things forever!
Of course the side with fighters could make pretty quick work spotter planes aircraft, giving them a nice edge in ititiative rolls.
I have spent a fair bit of thought during battles in avoiding rampaging fighters with my spotter aircraft all over the place trying to put distance between them and those damnable 109s!
