Federation fleet so far

The Big D

Mongoose
Hi all.

I've been a follower of ACTA SF since it was announced last year and have been waiting to get my hands on some miniatures and play some games.

Issues aside I now have them! Yippie! and have been furiously painting.

I'm really pleased with how they have come out so I thought I would come out of the shadows so to speak and show of a few pics of the fleet so far.

Decided to do a bit of conversion work to my 1 engined strike cruiser

KlingonFleetpartpainted.jpg

And they do need someting to fight after all! This is the WIP Klingons after their first few coats of paint. Saw the colours done by dave777 on the federation commander boards and had to nick his paint scheme. Shout out to dave777 for cool colours!

So there you are so far. All the decals are from the mongoose federation sheet #1.

Hope you like!

Did you use the Mongoose decals on the Feds?

Yep.

Put a layer of gloss varnish down first, followed by the transfer and a dab of Revell decal softner. Give it a minute and you can gently dab the decal into the detail of the miniature. When its dry a second coat of gloss to seal it and a coat of Matt to get rid of the shine.

They are very good decals and lots of choice on the names and numbers.

Had a few issues with the frigate as the letters are so small they could totally disappear into the ridges on the saucers! I had a bit of time teasing the name flat again and having a second go so the spaces were over the gap rather than the letters and that they didn't get pushed down so far!

If anyone was wondering on the Saladin I chopped the letters and numbers from the other names on the sheet I wasn't using PROMETHEUS NEW ZEALAND KONCORDIUM and the number from the constitution replacing the 17 with a 5 from the new zealand.

I think I might be nuts but hey ho! Need to do the Defiant, Xerxes and Lysander next. Good thing I bought a second decal sheet.

Speaking of decals I was hoping for some help on the ones for the Police cutter.

I'm having a problem deciding where they should go and was looking for peoples thoughts.

Option A (classic Federation layout)

PoliceCutteroptiona.jpg

The name obviously on the top at the front. The Larger decal with the registry number on the side of the engine where it will fit (just) and the flash on the side of the hull. Both in natty blue of course or...

Option B (classic Police Cutter layout)

PoliceCutteroptionb.jpg

The name again on the top at the front but this time the flash is on the side of the engine and the larger strip with the registry number is on the upper surface of the main hull.

My main concern with option B is if you were approaching the ship from underneath at pretty much any angle you would see no identifying markings of any kind. But of course when playing you will never see any ship from the underside so....

What does everyone think?

I open to the floor.

My first full game using 3 cruisers aside.

Feds -
1 CC (Lexington)
2 CA (Enterprise and Intrepid)

Klingons
1 C7 (Pain)
1 D7 (Decimator)
1 D6 (Anarchy)

Both Fleets closed on each other and concentrated all of their fire on each others flagship. The Feds went for overloaded torpedoes and the Klingons with Close blast doors.
With salvos of phaser fire and heavy weapons going off after 2 turns the lexington was very poorly and the pain a bit battered.
Turn 3 had the feds reloading torpedoes and swinging past the klingons with the CAs as the Lexington took the next salvo. with a combination of empty drone racks and crippled the Lexington took so much damage from fire and critcals that it simply blew up!
Bad for the Pain which was cloe enough to take the brunt on the damage as the D6 and D7 rounded on the Intrepid.
For most of the battle drones had done little effective damage until a couple made it through the Intrepids defences and criticalled the engines up to 6 permenantly immobilising it as the enterprise finished off the pain with phasers which also blew up severely damaging the Decimator!

Turn 4 began with both fed ships fully loaded with photons but the Intrepid immoble and the enterprise facing the wrong way with a D6 right up it's chuff!

The D7 was finished off with some phaser fire and the Intrepid managed to bring up enough shields to survive the incoming barrage but heroes of the hour were the crew of the enterprise. Pulling off a masterful HET with cries of 'she cannot take much more captain' the ship turned on the Anarchy and boresighted it with everything at point blank. 3 6s and a miss on the photons totally bypassed the shields and the front of the Klingong cruiser just fell off!

Victory for the Feds!

Learning points -

Immportant to track which phasers had fired at what for anti drone defence as a aingle antidrone system won't last that long.

A C7 has a lot of firepower in its frame.

Klingons really have to play the offensive game as their ships just don't have as much capacity to take damage.

Need some counters to record special orders and who has moved and fired.

Rejigging my record cards to track weapons fired and to record crew quality.

Playing the next game on Friday with a different opponent and I will probably use the same set of ships again.

Till later.

Hi Big D, thanks for stepping out of the shadows - don't worry, you're among friends here!

Those are a great-looking pair of fleets! Nice work! Wherever do you find the time to get them done?

I needed some inspiration to get my butt into gear, and finish my fleets - thanks for providing it!

Working shifts I get the odd couple of hours here and there where I can just sit and paint.
Any colours I needed to mix have been done up in bottles ready to go. Whilst waiting for the SF ships to come through I got a 2 foot model of the Enterprise by revell to do so I could learn the detail of the ships and I mixed up all of the colours for that from the instructions. I really liked the way it came out so I used those colours for the basis of the fed fleet. They just needed some shades and highlights to work!

And the Klingons were done in one big batch with big brushes. They went from black to that in about 6-8 hours with DS9 on in the backgroung for a bit more inspiration!

But the real kicker was that I wanted to play with them so, paint paint paint!

Added a new squadron to the fleet:

I do love doing conversions! Thank god for FJD and the simple design ethic of the federation!

Very nice job! Did you use a specific grey on the Fed highlights or did you mix your own?

It was one that I mixed up, but under instruction so to speak.

It was from the revell 1:600 scale Enterprise model.
The exact colour is:
60% revell 371 light grey, silky matt
30% revell 301 white, silky matt
10% revell 99 aluminium, metallic

The coverage is not good needing 2-3 coats over a white spray undercoat but has a nice subtle metallicy sheen.

The shading was citadel fortress grey mixed 2:3 with Lhamian medium to make a wash painted into the crevices and recesses.

The highlight was the base mix mixed 1:1 with the 301 white painstakingly painted around all of the details and along the tops of the engines.

Ta da...

I was thinking - how big should a shuttle be. The shuttle models seem to be at least 5 times the scale of the ships so I thought I would see what I could do about that!

Yep. A tiny shuttle!
