Excel Ship Designer v2024.12.08a

Okay, so I have an older copy & it has been changed. The 7D x3 is far less damage, which seems like the wrong direction to go with Ion weapons.
Not really.
For 2d6x10 you have 20-120 with a mean of 70
For 7Dx3 you have 21-126 with a mean of 73,5

The 2D6 x10 was before the tripling for being a Barbette weapon. The old damage resulted in a curve from 60 to 360, with the average at 210.

The new damage includes the tripling for being a Barbette weapon; resulting in a curve from 21 to 126, with an average at 73.5.

My print version of 2022 update shows the 7D version. The earlier HG had the 2Dx10 but the multiplier was not there yet - it was introduced in the 2022 update

Now that I have the summary listing everything line by line, is there a desire to move things like fuel purifiers to the systems/equipment section or leave them as is.
To me the fuel purifiers in fuel make sense, but Mongoose puts them under systems.
Convenience or Compliance? Or no one cares?

There isn't any official standard, it's more where the author feels like putting things. Fuel purifiers I have always seen under Systems though. Now sensor stations on the other hand might be listed under the bridge, under sensors or under systems.

I agree with these sentiments. While it might make some sense to keep them with the fuel, we're all used to seeing them as a system.

I like having all-things-fuel-related on a single tab; and I would be against changing that. Listing Fuel purifiers under 'Systems' on the summary page would be fine. Also listing 'Sensors', 'Computer', and 'Auxiliary Control areas' under 'Bridge' seems sensible.

I might be tempted to separate the 'Crew' area from the 'Mission' area, but that might be too big of an ask.

Thanks. If we get a consensus on sensor stations, I'll move them to bridge or leave them in sensors.
Anything else that might need a better/different placement?

The tabs are not moving. I am ONLY talking about the summary, so that it more readily matches existing Mongoose ships.
It'll never be exact.

Tell me more (or show with a screen shot) your ideas on Crew.

I'm for moving the sensor stations (and number of sensor actions) to the bridge area of the summary. I have no strong feelings on the fuel purifiers.

A ship has the bits which are essential to it being a working ship -- bridge, engineering, etc. The rest of it is allocated to whatever the ship does, its' 'mission'. A passenger ship puts passengers there; a cargo transport puts cargo there; a warship puts armor, marines, and weapons there; a scout puts special sensors; a prospecting ship puts excavation & ore-handling equipment, etc.

The 'crew' are part of the 'vital to being a ship' bit. Generally, it is good security practice to separate the 'ship' bits from passengers and other 'non-ship' bits. Mostly this is about drawing deck-plans; but it also allows easier thinking about modularization. On the 'Summary' sheet it might start with just putting all the 'non-crew' staterooms (and their common areas) on a separate line; other stuff like 'Laboratories' and 'Med Bays' can be decided later.

Speaking of common areas, does Biosphere count towards the required amount of common area?

There isn't a required amount of common area, just suggestions. Biosphere is a separate component and not part of common area, but feel free to count it as such if that works.

Biospheres are technically a life support alternative. It gets drawn in with common areas in liners and observation decks because it can be an aesthetic feature - that cuts operating costs!
The items in the Entertainment section do count as common areas... We just don't have a good chart ratios of common area to accommodations to moral to warrant keeping track. At least not without changing that sheet a bit.

Spaceships: Hulls and Options

73. A half tonne of biosphere eliminates the life support costs of a passenger (how about crew?).

74. It doesn't mention if it also eliminates the life support cost of the default accompanying stateroom.

...

77. Not accounting for hull tonnage and mortgage repayments, but including early fusion power plant, it would take ten and a half years of continuous occupation to break even with a biosphere per person.

78. Great for generation ships, probably less so for those who tend to stick to fortnightly cycles of jumping, surfing to the next starport, and pubcrawling, until it's time to ship out.
