Ethnic diversity

Bewildered Badger

Banded Mongoose
I've been looking at the piccies of the various infantry types and one thing struck me. All the soldiers for each faction seem to be made up of a single ethnic type. I realise that the pre-painting process may put limits on how much variety there is in each set, but would it be possible to show a bit more diversity?

Re-paint faces to taste. They're just plastic models. Its not something I care enough about to want to pay more for due to increased production costs.

it does make a diference though after all both the British army now and the USMC have a significant proportion of people from a variaty of minoraties

I agree with soulmage, just alter skintone to suit. Most painters will probably add at least small touches to their miniatures to make them stand out further anyways. I'll be altering a few skintones, painting a few badges and reflocking a few bases but keeping pretty much 95% of what comes out of the box.

When I was in the TA, maybe 10% of the soldiers I met were from ethnic minority groups, if that. There wasn't a single minority soldier in my unit, one minority soldier in our detachment (based elsewhere) and, I think, two that I met in basic training. Not sure it'd be worth the cost of sculpting new faces and getting extra paint runs done.

No. . . really it doesnt. Has no effect on gameplay. The game is NOT intended as a "simulation" or recruiting tool. Its just a game with playing pieces! Could be using red plastic pawns for all that it matters. The appearance of the models is purely a asthetic thing. If you prefer more diversity, create it! Don't try to force everyone else to pay more because that's an issue that's important to you. Just take care of it yourself!

And you dont think theres a danger that the game is gonna be misinterpreted as a battle between the exclusivly white skinned forces of good, and the "not ethnically european" forces of evil?
Not to bad right now to be honest, but people really might start to ask questions eventually.

 Wow. What are you, the president for the ACLU? And your sig says that you are the voice of reason?

Seriously though, if you really want to be picky about it, it makes sense to go with the ethnic majority for skin tone and if people want to change it, then go for it! The most important thing to remember; this is a GAME. You know, something that you do for fun?[/b]

I said it wasn't to bad yet lol, but Im thinking a bit further down the line when the African Warlord factions been released. If the US/EU forces at that point are still entirly white, people are bound to start talking aren't they?

no,not unless they are corrupted by PC beyond all hope
when we'r on PC topic, why are there no women amongs the models? sexist bastard!

sorry, but for me it's a bit like finding issues where there are none.

Look it's Token Black! :P

It's not 100% realistic having all white soldiers but then you'd also get arguments about the proportions of non-whites!

on the other hand those Chinese don't look very Chinese to me!

Hehe glad to hear Im not the only person who thought that emperorpenguin.

Hey, I've said its not so bad at the moment, but present day/near future gaming can attract that sort of flack if it isnt careful.

Maybe not to you, but as a black jewish lesbian member of the armed forces I feel there should be a model representing my interests if mongoose wants my money!

All this race stuff... Has anyone given even a moment's thought to the left-handed community?

I thought so. Bunch of right-hand supremacists. :P

Wow. Just... wow....

Sometimes people just set out looking for trouble I think :(

What about the horrible racist game of chess where its all about black vs white?

Or all those WW2 games where you can play as NAZI forces?!?! Its a GAME ffs, not a political statement. If you really want to worry about people picking holes in the morality of the game bear in mind that mordern war games allow you to recreate battles going on RIGHT NOW in the streets of Iraq and the mountains of Afganistan etc. And yet people still find the time to make stupid comments like 'I think the british army miniatures arent racially diverse enough'?!?!

If you want some diverstiy in your minis PAINT THEM A DIFFERENT COLOUR. Theres not that much detail on their faces ffs and frankly if you think that you should make their feaures able to determine their race that obviously then I think your in far more danger of making steryotype models that WOULD be racist. Remember were talking about little tiny miniatures, theyre not THAT detailed, just paint their skins different colours if you want a multiracial unit.

And just for final empahsis, one last time. ITS. A. SMEGGING. GAME!!!!!!!

And, erm, I think MS commented in an earlier thread that everyone has the same skin tone to reduce mould/paint costs for the initial release of the game. He also implied that if things went well we'd see more racially diverse squads in the future.
