Entering the Spirit Plane

Do you need to test the Spirit Walking skill to enter the spirit plane, or is it just going into a trance for a set number of minutes, and spending a magic point, or do you need to roll Spirit Walking to first enter the trance?

The text isn't very clear on the issue. On page 138 it says:

Spirit Walking (POW+CON)
This skill represents the spirit magician’s awareness of the Spirit Plane and its denizens. Anyone with this skill can, with a successful roll, detect (but not observe) the presence of spirits within a range of their POW in metres.

Soon after it says:

Utilising any of the following abilities requires entering a trance-like state, which takes a number of minutes equal to the Species Maximum POW –their Characteristic POW and costs a single Magic Point. If the Skill Test is successful then the spirit magician can perform the following dependant on his rank:

It then lists 4 options

Finally on page 149 it says:

If the roll is a critical success then entering the trance is achieved in a single minute.

What's the official ruling on how you exactly you enter the Spirit Plane?

Thanks all

If the entry to the spirit plane isn't time-critical, then, with enough time to meditate, no distractions and so on, then its likely to be a guaranteed success - so no roll.

If, however, it is time critical then a roll is needed.

So…

a) Spend 1 magic point and meditate for a number of minutes equal to Species' maximum POW - POW Characteristic

b) if no pressure, there’s no roll, if pressured, make a Spirit Walking test

c) Once on the plane, you can use certain powers dependent on rank, and also bind spirits using Spirit Binding.
