Hi...first post for the play test forums. I've been playing Traveller since way back in the 1970's/little black book phase. I've been reading the core book and I like the new feel and look so far. Really like the Boon and Bane mechanic to the game. One thing, though, is it seems like there isn't enough of a definition of what is considered to be in the purview of Bonn/bane and what is simply setting another difficulty rating other than medium. The text for Boon/Bane reads that they are uses in "..situations that arise that will make things easier or harder for the Travellers." My question is, how does this differ from just making the target number for the task easier or harder?

The way I understand it is this. Difficulty refers to the difficulty of the thing itself. So assuming you are in a blank white room alone with that computer, how hard is it to hack into it? The boon/bane thing is for extenuating or environmental circumstances that give the player and advantage or disadvantage when trying to attempt something. Same computer only now you're in a snowstorm and you are distracted by the freezing cold. Difficulty would be the same, but you would roll at a bane.
