Empires of the Hyborian Age

Okay, Conan fans...

As you might have guessed, we have had something of an issue with Empires of the Hyborian Age. It had always been our intention to publish it via Signs & Portents, alongside the Thief's Companion and snippets from other hitherto unpublished Conan material.

However, when we started taking a good look at the manuscript, we had trouble seperating it out into bite-sized chunks - all the rules within are fundamentally reliant upon one another, making the turning of them into 'modules' problematic.

That said, we want to do our best for fans of the game who have supported it throughout the years, and so we have decided to post the entire draft manuscript on our site - for free!

Now, a couple of points to be made here. It _is_ a draft manuscript that has had just one editing pass and one round of playtesting, so you are going to find it a little raw. There will be plenty of pXXs scattered about and probably some typoes. Also, we would ask that, while you are free to modify these rules anyway you wish, you do not redistribute these files in any way, shape or form.

Finally, we would also ask that, in return for this complete (and rather sizeable) supplement, if there are any Conan books in the current range that you are currently missing, you give good consideration to picking them up. We can't do the next great fantasy sword & sorcery game if we give everything away for free :)

Anyway, without further ado, if you take a trip to the web address below, you will find Empires of the Hyborian Age ready for you to download. Oh, and expect to see more Conan material in S&P over the next few months.

Thanks Matt - looks like a good read - and yes, I've been stocking up on all my missing Conan products!

Cheers

Huge Thumbs Up!

:D

How's this for quid pro quo: I just finished buying the complete Conan game line. Everything you ever published for the Conan RPG, I just purchased over the last month (Everything except the pocket rule book and the Atlanetean Edition, because I don't need the former and can't find the latter).

And, I bought everything new, too. Not used.

I spent some bucks, but I got, complete, the best Conan game ever created to date.

I've been spending my spare time trying to read all this stuff. It's a lot!

And...take a pull on the hellhorn for me should you get there first!

Matt, I just wanted to add my thanks as well, not only to you but to all the folks who worked on this material in any way, shape or form.

I was truly stoked when this was set for release last year and subsequently kinda crushed when it was pulled.

I really appreciate that you guys chose to release it as a whole, polished or no, rather than publishing just bits and pieces in S&P.

I'm right there with S4, too: I've just placed orders for new copies of The Scrolls of Skelos and the GM's screen, the last two items I need for my collection (not including the pocket rule book and the Atlantean Edition for the same reasons he mentioned, though I do have a PDF of the latter).

Thanks again!

Thanks a lot, really. I've always been a supporter of your Conan line from the first to the last product available. The work everyone at Mongoose has put into the line is awesome and deserves to be highly praised.

Glad to see that instead of the slow death we all feared, the Conan rpg line goes with a bang ! :D

This is really great Matt! Huge thanks! I already own every Conan book published by Mongoose, but I'll keep on picking up stuff from other ranges from time to time (mostly RQ2 and Traveller these days)...

Thanks Matt - I guess we get our final Conan RPG book after all. Thanks for finishing off the line with a wonderful gesture of thanks for the Conan RPG fan's support. Very much appreciated.

On formatting Empires... As I enjoy a finished product with attractive fonts and without the [[Box text]] tags and such, I will be formatting the Empires documents (with the Mongoose Conan products look) and compiling them into one pdf for my own use.

If someone has already done this, I'd hate to duplicate the effort, so I'd love a heads-up.

Also for Matt: assuming I made no changes to content, would posting this pdf version in the Conan forum constitute forbidden redistribution?

Cheers, Leo

You can download this again, at least for a bit while Conan is in the out of print sale.

It is really a pity this book never get published!!
Due to my playing style, at the moment, I cannot use the political side (although I would really like to play a birthright-style Hyborian game).

Nevertheless, I'm still particularly interested in the mass combat rules (something in the middle between the other two systems we have).
However, something is missing.

I understand that the file is quite rough, without further reviews, but the chapter on mass combat makes constant reference to a "Random Military Unit Damage Table".
Where can we find it?

Message for Vincent: sorry to bother you, but is it possible to get it, or do we break any Mongoose copyright?

Luca, What mass combat systems are you referring to? I only know the Free Companies system, What´s the other one?

download "empires of the Hyborian Age", there is a very good mass combat system, which does not require minis (as it is more or less required in the old pdf), and it is not as generic as the one in Free Companies.

I do not know wether any of yo uever tried the Mass Combat system in this volume.
On general terms I found it fantastic.
However, to me the system seems to work more for very large battles (ech "unit" numbering at least 5000 men) since each formation space get 1 attack, but it can damage more than 1 space!
This means that in a battle of 2000 vs 2000 men, the first who attacks kills all of them!
I have one proposal of modification: making 1 attack per formation (1 formation = 5 spaces) and not 1 attack per space.
Does any of you used that system and do you like my home rule?
