Elric RPG and resisting potions.

Reading the Elric MRQ2 rulesbook about potions (from page 84), some potions allow an opposed resistance roll of the Resistance skill of the imbiber Vs the potion maker's Rune skill associated with the potion.

So this means if character A with a resistance skill of say 70% drinks a potion of domination made by bad guy B with a Rune of Domination skill (used to make the potion) of say 80% then Character A can only resist by making a critical success? (I.E rolling 07 on a percentile?).

OR

Is it that the roll made to make the potion by bad buy B is rolled against? So for example if Bad guy B with a domination rune of 80% rolls 50 on a percentile to make the potion, then character A only needs to roll over 50? (or a critical of course).

Reading teh rules descriptions it looks to me that basically Character A in this example (with the resistance of 70%) would have to crit to succeed, but that seems pretty darn powerful, but then maybe potions are very powerful..

Opinions?

I would go for option 2 in the case you describe. I think that potions can vary in their strength and potency.
A snake venom of potency 50%, however, i would regard as a constant and automatically assume it to have taken effect. Only the victims opposed resilience roll is required. Not sure if I'm playing it right though....

I have just re-read the rules for potions and my interpretation is as option 2 in danskmacabre's post. But I disagree with tarkhan bey's version of animals venom. The random determination of the venom potency would represent the difference in toxicity of young, juvenile and mature animals, it can also take into account how many creatures the snake, for example, has bitten that day or how frequently it has been milked to make a potion.

I would definitely make a roll against the rune skill at the time the potion was imbibed to determine it's potency. I'm not sure I would with the animal venoms - what happens if you fail? It turns out that that particular batch of poison wasn't, well, poisonous?

I see exactly what you are saying BigOrc but JWPacker has made my point for me. When statting the snake I would take into account the things you refer to before setting it's poison potency. :)

tarkhan bey, after some thought about what you say in your last post, about setting the poison's potency, I have to agree and will use that methord myself in future. Thanks.
