Dusting off the Last Best Hope

Having indulged in a Marathon B5 Vid session over the weekend, I'm toying with running it. I have all the 1st ed stuff up to Technomages, in peoples honest opinion how worth while is it investing in the 2nd Ed rules? Are the post 2nd Ed supplements backwards compatible?

And what is it with the Swedish Meatballs?

On compatibility.

There is a pretty lightweight conversion guide in the back of 2nd Edition to convert characters from 1st to 2nd edition, I have been nagging Mongoose for a more complete conversion guide for equipment, vehicles, prestige classes, etc.

THe 2nd part of a conversion guide is in the most recent edition of Signs & Portents (Roleplayer 38), I can't remember where the 1st part is...

Having run both the 1st and the 2nd edition rules of B5, I prefer the 2nd edition as I believe it captures the feel of the show better.

It's also made the rules easier to work with, though I have yet to introduce a telepath into the party.

I really liked the abstract space combat system, once you learn it, it is a lot faster and easier to RPG than the 1st Edition varient which did suit a miniature style of play.

One of the player personal favorites is the skill system and not rolling for hit points at first level.

Though having heard a lot about what Star Wars RPG Saga Edition is doing, it sounds like a step beyond what b5 2nd Ed did. I might incorporate those rules into my B5 game when it is released...

That is a likely selling point, I was using Star Wars space combat rules, 'cos to be frank, I couldn't get the B5 ones to work very well. Possibly me and my group were a bit thick but they did seem broke.

i did find the SW rules easier than the b5 1st ed rules as well... Though I admit I avoided the 1st ed space combat where possible.

The new system, even though I have only used it twice, was a lot easier to figure out what is happening than the older version.

I am still not sure what I was doing with it, though I only had five attempts before the campaign ended a few years ago...
