Duck farming methods

I know farming methods dont interest many people but saw something that might interst those who like to put in more detail to their game
I was watching a program on the Aztecs and their famous floating gardens. It showed how they would make a raft out of reeds on the lake, cover it with dirt and then plant vegtables and other plants. These floating gardens required not only less work, as there was no need to make sure they where watered, but also yielded about twice amount of food a conventional plot of would on land.
later the thought hit me this would be a great farming method for Ducks as unlike Aztec Humans who had to limit these gardens to shallow water ducks could use water of any depth as long as it was relatively still. And
Ducks could also attemp to tow these rafts to safety if Danger came.

I love it.

Some of my ducks will be doing it.

They can also live in huts on such floating plots - good for protection.

And I love such mundane aspects as farming techniques, they can really add to a game, so keep any such tidbits coming. :)

Love the idea.

Only problem is I can't think of an awful lot of lakes, especially in the dragon pass/kethelia region. I suppose quieter stretches of rivers would do the job just as well.

Floating huts works too, especially as ducks are small, so their dwellings would ( presumably ) be small as well.

I'm getting visions of duck 'villages' of lots of hut and farm 'islands', occasionally coming together for festivals/markets and connected by beams so they stay in place for the duration.

Of course, another option is that they live by the shore, and can 'retreat' to their farms when threatened.

Perhaps some of them are dam builders.

And perhaps this pisses off downstream inhabitants. I see Newtling assaults on Duck dams.

Newtlings and Ducks killing eachother, talk about a win-win situation. :D

May not be alot of Lakes, but there a good amount of swamp in the Holy Country For example the swamp between Frog island and the Shadow plateau where these methods could be used. For example my map of Esrolia shows a large swamp between the Shadow plateau and Frog Island. and others between Heartland and Gods Forgot.
And it could be fun to run something even on a small lake, after all you know those Ducks have to be growing something good on that raft in the middle of the local pond. After all if you can steal sheep from other clans as an Orlanthi, why not watermelons.

I saw the title of this thread, and thought it was about something completely different. . .

Oh good. So did I. Now we know the real reason the ducks hate Delecti - and what he was really doing for the EWF.

The Downside is you can't cultivate Oranges on floating farms, which just goes to show inconsiderate ducks really are, no consideration for gourmets!

Just watch out for the Trolls and Giants.

According to King of Sartar, a long series of lakes existed along the Creek-Stream-River during the EWF. There are also a fair number of lakes in what would become Tarsh both along the rivers and in betweeen the ridges.

Hi All,

I already stole the idea of the floating farm islands for the Rightarm Islands when I wrote them up with Martin Hawley for Tales and Tradetalk.
